AT&T union talks to continue, strike avoided
بازدید : 417 مرتبه
AT&T have failed to reach an agreement with the Communication Workers of America, but have stated that negotiations will continue. The CWA is negotiating four different contracts with the company, which affects as many as 40,000 jobs, roughly 16% of AT&Ts total workforce.
AT&T said theyve failed to agree on a new deal prior to the expiry of the East, Legacy T, Midwest and West contracts. Union members had authorized CWA on March 31to call strikes if their demands were not met, but the parties have stated that talks will go on. However, the threat is very much there, as the CWA had led a two week strike for 35,000 employees at Verizon as recently as last summer.
Is Samsung making too many devices?
بازدید : 312 مرتبه
Of course, this information may not mean much right now. It is still unknown if Samsung will even use such trademarks, or if they will keep the names. It is also unknown if these are tablets, phones, or anything else. But “Galaxy” is attached to Samsung’s Android products, and it is a bit interesting to see a bit of what could be coming. The company has also filed for other trademarks in the past few months. These include the Galaxy Joy, Fresh, Awaken, Axiom, Heir and Rite. What a list, right?
Samsung is known for constantly manufacturing a plethora of devices for all markets. It can become a bit overwhelming at times, which is the reason why manufacturers like HTC and Motorola are deciding to make fewer, better devices. But covering all sides of the spectrum has its benefits, and it seems like Samsung is not stopping.
With that said, we might not be seeing most of these devices. If we do, odds are that we will not care much for most of them. But what do you guys think? Should Samsung follow the other guys and stop releasing devices like pancakes?
Toray Advanced Film: Self-healing screen protectors? You got them!
بازدید : 461 مرتبه
The company has already manufactured a screen-protecting film that will self-heal. Claims state that minor scratches and dents will disappear in 10 seconds or less. This excludes damage done by knife, or any other similar sharp object, though.
After successfully testing the film about 20,000 times, this looks to be a very promising product. In fact, it is already being used for a limited number of notebook computers, but the company plans to extend its work and manufacture “several hundred thousand square meters per year.” So we might be seeing such film layers coming to all our devices fairly soon.
Rumor: AT&T Galaxy Nexus with 4G LTE in the works
بازدید : 532 مرتبه
The news come from Andro Rev, who’s source is claimed to be working “very close to the situation.” It is also mentioned that these are standard SIM cards, unlike Verizon’s micro SIM cards. The source does confirm that these are 4G LTE enabled, and the SKU for the SIM cards is 73057.
Whether this is true or not is something that only time will tell. As always, we should take it with a grain of salt. Rumors come and go around the inter webs, many of them proving to be false. But what do you guys say? Would you go for AT&T’s Galaxy Nexus if it does, in fact, get released soon? Is it too late by now?

LG to release a “thinking smartphone”?
بازدید : 326 مرتبه
Bong-Suk goes on to mention that Apple should not be the only one that can bring the “next great mobile innovation.” A company like LG can identify “universal value” that consumers seek for.
The Korean manufacturer is looking to move away from simply adding cool features and specs to their devices. They want to make a phone that will not only help make your life easier, but it will intelligently aid you in doing so.
Kwon’s example revolves around a smartphone that can modify your alarm clock based on traffic. If traffic is not an issue, it will give you some extra sleeping time, while you would have to wake up earlier if the opposite is the case.
We have heard of such idea before, and possibilities are endless. There is no doubt that such concept would make things much better; but what would be the cost? LG assures us that they are keeping price in mind. And they want to release a $100 smartphone, but they will not do so if it means sacrificing the product’s quality.
For now, lets stick to our smartphones, which arguably can think, as well. We will have to wait and see what the future holds. And let’s hope the machines don’t take over some day.
[Via: The Verge]
After the Samsung Infuse news today, and now the Pantech Crossover getting its update to Gingerbread you could have easily mistaken Android 2.3.6 to be the latest version of the platform. Unfortunately, thats the sad truth of the situation.
Anyhoo, heres what you Crossover users can look forward too, as detailed by Pocketnow.
Deal: LG Lucid 4G now going for 1 penny from Amazon
بازدید : 463 مرتبه
Been looking for a new affordable Verizon 4G LTE device? If so, this might be one of the best deals around. The LG Lucid is going for $0.01 at Amazon Wireless, a deal that might be a no-brainer for those looking for a strong, yet affordable device.
The Lucid 4G has a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and Android 2.3. We have no word on an Ice Cream Sandwich update, but we would say the odds shouldn’t be too much against your favor. And since it was just released (end of March), this deal is not bad at all.
Amazon is also currently offering a few other good devices for a penny. Such include the Motorola DROID 3, the DROID Bionic and the HTC Droid Incredible 2. Some of these might be better options, but it is good to know that the LG Lucid 4G is now part of the penny team.
If you have been eyeing it, just head over to Amazon Wireless and sign up! Also, this offer applies to any form of 2-year contract agreement. Whether you are upgrading, adding a line or opening a new account, you are in for the deal. Such is usually not the case, and most times devices cost a bit more when they are purchased as upgrades or new lines.

If you like your live wallpapers , and dont give a hoot about being tracked without giving Sprint/Samsung permission, then you might want to avoid this update, since some of them (Magic, Smoke, Many, Maps, Nexus, Spectrum, Water and Waveform) are also going to disappear.
Micromax launches $125 ICS tablet in India
بازدید : 487 مرتبه
There are more than a few "cheap" Android tablets available in my country, India, where by and large price is one of the most important factors when it comes to purchasing gadgets. After all, were the country of the $35 Aakash tablet, which is revered by quite a lot of people (personally, Im quite a bit against the Aakash, but that discussion is for another time).
As you would expect, the quality of these tablets is pretty awful, but I believe that the Funbook, a $125 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet released by Micromax, will sell like hotcakes here.
Despite being barely known abroad, Micromax is one of the most exciting mobile manufacturers over here. The reason is that they have gained significant market share over the past two years, and the biggest loser in their blaze of glory is Nokia, who had up till quite recently been ubiquitous with mobile phones in India and other South Asian countries.
Though there were several other cheap handset makes, what set Micromax apart was their build quality. When you buy a Micromax, you arent buying something clunky. Yes, the internal hardware is still poor, but thats expected. And thanks to this, Micromax has built a decent reputation for itself.
For this reason, Im actually excited to see them enter the tablet realm. At Rs 6499, I wont be surprised if I see a lot more tablets everywhere I go by the end of the summer. People are excited by tablets here, and theyve finally gotten one priced low enough and from a brand that isnt synonymous with junk.
As expected, the hardware isnt great. Theres a single core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor coupled with a Dual Mali 400 GPU and 512 MB RAM, only 4 GB of on board memory, and a battery life of (up to 5 hours of browsing), but these specs dont matter here at all. What are their killer features? A 7 inch capacitive touch screen, accelerometer, and, most importantly, a USB port with the capability to host an internet dongle that comes with it (giving the user 3G data capability).
And the personal highlight for me? Its made in India. I love the sound of that.

Version 2.0: Android Blogging, Re-Imagined
بازدید : 471 مرتبه
We’re pleased to announce that WordPress for Android 2.0 has been released to Android Market! This version is packed full with new features to make your mobile blogging experience better than ever. Check out the video and read more about what’s new in the update below:
New UI: Action Bar and Dashboard
Everything you want to do, all in one place. The Dashboard is the first thing you see when launching the app and it provides one-tap access to the most common things you use such as creating a new post or viewing stats. A new comment count ribbon shows you how many unapproved comments you have in your moderation queue. Want to post some media quickly? We added Quick Photo and Video buttons to take you right to the camera so you can shoot the moment and instantly attach it to a new post.
Also new is the Action Bar, which allows you to quickly switch blogs, refresh content or show the Dashboard from wherever you are in the app at the time.
New Post Editor
The post editor has been revamped, allowing more control over the post content than ever before. A formatting toolbar has been added above the keyboard that allows for easy rich text editing and adding links. You can now add media content wherever you like and edit the Title, Caption, Placement and Size of images. The editor also is now full screen, so you can see as much of the content as possible while editing.
We’ve also added support for Post Formats, you’ll see a drop down menu in the post editor that allows you to select the appropriate Post Format.
Got an Android Tablet? We’ve got you covered! We paid special attention to large screen devices in this release. When you’re viewing Posts, Pages and Comments you will see a scrolling list of items on the left, with a detail view on the right. Many other areas of the app have been optimized for tablets including the post editor and stats.
We’ve also added support for the newer 7″ tablets, including the Kindle Fire (app will be available in the Amazon Appstore soon).
In addition to these great changes above, here’s what else is new:
WordPress for Android is an Open Source project. Many people contributed to this release, including Anirudh who participated in the 2011 Google Summer of Code program and worked on the app for his project. We’d also like to extend a big thanks to all of the beta testers who helped test the app out on their devices before the release. If you want to help make the app better, check out our developer blog for more info.
WordPress for Android 2.0 is available in the Android Market.
Nook Touch hack enables multi-touch on e-ink
بازدید : 302 مرتبه
The Nook Color and Nook Tablet get the most attention out of Barnes & Noble’s e-reader line, at least from an Android modder standpoint, but many forget that all of the Nook devices run Android – and all have been thoroughly modded. Even the humble Nook Touch has been thoroughly rooted with custom apps and ROMs, though the e-ink reader’s hardware limitation prevents some of the more basic Android tasks from being completed. One of those can be disregarded now: XDA members wheiltijohnny and Mani100 have devised some custom code that enables multi-touch gestures for the diminutive e-ink reader.
The mod should be a simple one for anyone who’s already rooted their Nook Touch: just load their ZIP file into ClockWorkMod recovery, flash it, and you’re good to go. The results are impressive considering the hardware that they’re running on. Multi-touch gestures work just as you’d think they would in the web browser and games like Angry Birds (naturally). While the Nook Touch’s e-ink screen means that it can’t display animations as fast as normal LCD screens, and certainly not as fast as your fingers, three or four frames per second is more than enough for most tasks.
Black and white isn’t ideal for anything but reading (and possibly the more sedate versions of sudoku) but’s perfectly serviceable for most applications. The Nook Simple Touch, the latest version of the hardware, costs just $99 in the US. Not bad for a device class that cost $300 or more a few years ago, and a bargain for those who can modify it to their liking.
Draw Something gets 50 million downloads in 50 days
بازدید : 314 مرتبه
Angry Birds? Small stuff. Instagram? Hipster fodder. Apparently the real mobile gaming sensation is Draw Something from startup OMGPOP!. The Pictionary-style Android and iOS game has racked up an incredible 50 million downloads in as many days across both platforms. At least 10 million (and probably a good bit more) come from the free Android version, and another 500,000 to a million have paid for the upgraded game. iTunes doesn’t publish its app numbers, but Draw Something has consistently held the top spot among games there and in the Google Play Store.
A few weeks after Draw Something blew up, OMGPOP! was bought outright by Zynga for $180 million. That’s something like EA buying BioWare in the tumultuous world of mobile gaming – Zynga’s got the similar dirty reputation, and the piles and piles of cash. Not that OMGPOP! is hurting or anything: Draw Something has an impressively diverse collection of paid and fremium models, relying on minimal ads and in-app purchases of extra paints for better pictures. Some players have taken an insane amount of time into answering their prompts, like the finger-painted masterpiece above from Art Of Draw Something.
The app’s ease of use, pick-up-and-play pacing, social tools and addictive nature make it a textbook case of a social gaming hit. Draw Something draws (ba-dum tish) of Facebook tools for quick games with friends, and settles for random games when they’re around, not unlike the many Scrabble clones available at the moment. There’s telling what’ll happen to the game now that it’s in the clutches hands on Zynga, but odds are pretty good they won’t be messing too much with a winning formula. Incidentally, Draw Something is one of the better arguments for picking up a big-screened phone with lots of input options, like, say, the Samsung Galaxy Note, over certain fruit-themed devices.
Google’s Floor Plan Marker improves indoor Google Maps
بازدید : 295 مرتبه
Google’s indoor maps feature for Google Maps is a great idea, but implementing it will take more than waiting for Google’s cameramobiles to drive around to your address (with the possible exception of the new Super Wal-Mart Drive-Thru). Business owners have been able to upload floorplans to Google Maps for some time now, but that still doesn’t provide particularly accurate information without a lot of WiFi around. Enter the Floor Plan Marker, Google’s official helper app for indoor Google Maps. You can download it from the Google Play Store right now.
It’s a pretty simple app, all things considered: just load up your location, start the app and walk around. Google will user the sensor data from your phone (including the WiFi connection, accelerometer, magnometer and the GPS radio where applicable) to generate a more accurate map, and automatically upload it to Google Maps. For those few places that already have indoor maps, you’ll be able to see your own location with much greater precision.
Like all of Google’s first party apps, Floor Plan Market is free, so if you frequent locations that use the service there’s no reason not to grab it. Alternately if you’re the own or manager of a larger retail location, it’s never been easier to get your place of business up and running on the service. Get to it. In a few months, there might be quite a bit more demand…
HTC probably won’t include Beats headphones with future smartphones
بازدید : 452 مرتبه
If you’re a big fan of Beats headphones, turn down your bass and listen for a minute. Though HTC has been making a lot of its investment and partnership with the Beats by Dr. Dre brand, it looks like they’re going to be scaling back a bit, at least as far as pack-ins are concerned. That means no free Beats headphones with HTC smartphones, at least for the immediate future. HTC told Cnet that its research suggested that the headphones included with phone like the HTC Sensation XL and Verizon’s Rezound weren’t a significant factor in their buying decisions, making it a fiscally responsible decision to do without them.
HTC invested $300 million into Beats Audio, acquiring 51% of its market value and effectively controlling the smaller company. While Beats still operates independently (and licenses its technology to non-competing manufacturers like Hewlett Packard) HTC has been making the most of the association, incorporating the Beats brand into new smartphones including all three of the HTC One family. Beats amplifiers, equalizers and settings are included in these phones, and the software portions of Beats are being added into older phones like the HTC Vivid as part of their Ice Cream Sandwich/Sense 3.6 update.
None of the One series phones are getting Beats headphones out of the box, though some retailers (including T-Mobile) are using the branding association to try and sell the pricey headphones separately. Beats is doing well enough on its own – the hefty profit margin and celebrity status symbol seems to be making the conglomeration quite enough independent cash. HTC wouldn’t rule out pack-in audio equipment for good, but it’s safe to say that you won’t be seeing any for the next several months at least. Rumors indicate the HTC is planning a subscription music service with MOG Music, but nothing’s come of it yet.
Big news appears to have hit the streets over the past couple of days regarding Samsung’s next onslaught of Android tablets. Earlier this week we reported the Galaxy Tab 2 with Android 4.0 ICS was delayed until late April although no reason was released. Today we are now hearing the Galaxy Note 10.1 has also been delayed, but with good reason. The delay is because it will be receiving a quad-core instead.
According to details gathered by PocketDroid the 10.1-inch Galaxy Note has been delayed to sometime in June as Samsung replaces the 1.4 GHz dual-core under the hood with their own in-house quad-core Exynos processor. It is possible that they’ll go with the Tegra 3 too, but most likely they’ll opt for their own silicon.
These details has seemingly been confirmed by a local economic newspaper in Korea the IPD but we will continue to hunt for more details as this is just hitting the wires. The Galaxy Note 10.1 features the same impressive S-Pen technology as the Galaxy Note, and will launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board. I personally don’t mind a small delay if that means we’ll be seeing a quad-core to compete with the Tegra 3. We’ll update with additional details once made available.
Making the Android Developer Console work for your whole team
بازدید : 370 مرتبه
[This post is by Ellie Powers, a product manager on the Google Play team. — Tim Bray]As your apps have gotten more successful, more people have joined your team. Today, we’re making it easier to work together on analyzing and managing your published Android apps. Sharing passwords is generally a bad idea; so as of now, there’s no need to do that for the Android Developer Console — everyone can use his or her own Google account.
The account that you use today to sign into the Android Developer Console will become the account owner; only the account owner can manage access to the Console. The account owner can email an invitation to anyone; when they accept it, they’ll need to use a Google account to sign in.
Different people in your team do different jobs, so when you invite someone to your Android Developer Console, you’ll be able to specify what access they need. Today, you can limit access per-user to financial reports. In the future, we’ll give you more fine-grained control over access to the Console. For details, see Account owner and user access.
We hope this helps your team collaborate more easily. If you have any issues, feel free to get in touch via the Developer Help Center.
Unifying Key Store Access in ICS
بازدید : 296 مرتبه
[This post is a group effort by Tony Chan, Fred Chung, Brian Carlstrom, and Kenny Root. — Tim Bray]
Android 4.0 (ICS) comes with a number of enhancements that make it easier for people to bring their personal Android devices to work. In this post, we’re going to have a look at the key store functionality.
Back in Android 1.6 (Donut), a system key store was added for use by VPN. Although this was later expanded to support WiFi authentication, applications weren’t able to access it.
In the past, it was common practice for apps to maintain their own key store if they needed to authenticate a secure SSL web server, or authenticate the user to a server via a client certificate. While this works, it can present manageability issues in an enterprise environment where multiple certificates may be shared across a number of apps such as Email and Browser.
New in ICS: KeyChain
To bridge the gap in ICS, there’s a new API named KeyChain that regulates application access to the system key store and allows users to grant application access to the credentials stored there. Additionally, this API enables applications to initiate installation of credentials from X.509 certificates and PKCS#12 key stores.
The KeyChain API is rather simple. To install a key store or a certificate, you retrieve an install intent, supply the raw bytes of the credentials, and use the intent to launch a system installation dialog. If it’s a keystore, as in the example below, you’ll need provide the data in PKCS#12 format, and the user will have to know the PKCS#12 password.
The install intent launches a system dialog that prompts the user to enter the password for the keystore.
This can also be used for installing organizational CA certificates which will then be trusted by all applications to authenticate to non-public servers with certificates issued by the same CA.
In ICS, Android no longer requires a separate password to protect the system credential storage. Rather, it uses the screen lock password for this purpose, and the Android Device Administration API can be used for central policy enforcement. This means, for example, that the screen lock password can’t be removed as long as the secured credentials remain on the device.
Accessing System Key Store Credentials
Once the system key store is configured, the KeyChain API offers functions such as requesting a client certificate for authenticating with an SSL server. The first time an application requests access, the user is prompted with a list of available certificates and can select one to grant access to that certificate to the application. If the user chooses to allow access to a certificate, a string alias name for the certificate is returned to the application. The application can then use the alias to access the certificate in the future without further user involvement.
The code below illustrates how an application can prompt the user to select a credential alias and grant access to the application. KeyChain will remember this selection such that the same application can save the credential alias selection and have access to the same certificate in future. For example, the Email application for ICS has implemented this feature in its Server Settings screen.
Once an application has been granted access to the certificate, it can access the private key through the getPrivateKey() method. It is worth noting that as with any PrivateKey objects, the application should not make assumptions about the encoding. For example, on some implementations the PrivateKey object may just be an opaque representation of a key stored in a hardware key store.
Here’s a sample code snippet that demonstrates the use of private key retrieved from the key store for signing:
A common use of the private key is for SSL client authentication. This can be implemented by using an HttpsURLConnection with a custom X509KeyManager that returns the PrivateKey retrieved from the KeyChain API. The open source Email application for ICS uses KeyChain with an X509ExtendedKeyManager. To learn more, have a look at the source code (in SSLUtils.java).
This API provides a unified way to access the system key store credentials. If your application uses client certificates (take note: enterprise email client or web browser developers) you should definitely look into the KeyChain API for your next update!
Introducing Google Play
بازدید : 327 مرتبه
[This post is by Kenneth Lui, Android Developer Ecosystem. —Dirk Dougherty]
Today we’re launching Google Play, an integrated destination for apps, books, movies, and music, accessible to users on Android devices and to anyone on the Web. As part of this launch, Google Play replaces and extends Android Market — users everywhere can now find their favorite apps and games in Google Play, with other digital content, all in one place.
We believe that with a strong brand, compelling offerings, and a seamless purchasing and consumption experience, Google Play will drive more traffic and revenue to the entire ecosystem.
We’ll be investing in the brand to bring Google Play to as many people as possible, and we’ll also invest in the latest digital content to keep Google Play fresh, relevant, and engaging. Apps and games remain the core of Google Play, so we’ll continue investing in new ways to connect users with their favorite apps, and developers with new customers.
As we grow and promote Google Play around the world, we’ll be marketing your apps and games at the same time. Our policies have not changed and our goal is still the same — to create a great, open marketplace for distributing Android apps.
Google Play is built on the same infrastructure as Android Market, so the transition for users and developers will be seamless. Users can sign into their existing accounts with the same credentials as before and purchase content using the same payment methods. As a developer, there’s no change needed to your published products and you can continue to use the same publishing tools to put your app in front of hundreds of millions of Android users. If your app was in Android Market yesterday, it’s in Google Play today.
We’ll be rolling out Google Play to devices in a phased OTA update, starting today and continuing over the days to come. With the update, the Android Market app will upgrade to the Play Store app and the Music, Videos, and Books apps will upgrade to Play Music, Play Movies, and Play Books. This update is for devices running Android 2.2 or higher, and users on other devices will continue to have the same access to your apps as before.
You can start sending customers to your products in Google Play right away. Check out the updated “Get it on Google Play” badges and look for an email with more details on the transition. In the meantime, you can check out the Google Play web site at the link below and join the discussion on +Android Developers.
Share With Intents
بازدید : 374 مرتبه
[This post is by Alexander Lucas, an Android Developer Advocate bent on saving the world 5 minutes. —Tim Bray]
[Please join the discussion on Google+.]
Intents are awesome. They are my favorite feature of Android development. They make all sorts of stuff easier. Want to scan a barcode? In the olden platforms, if you were lucky, this involved time and effort finding and comparing barcode-scanning libraries that handled as much as possible of camera interaction, image processing, an internal database of barcode formats, and UI cues to the user of what was going on. If you weren’t lucky, it was a few months of research & haphazard coding to figure out how to do that yourself.
On Android, it’s a declaration to the system that you would like to scan a barcode.
See that? That’s nothing. That’s 5 minutes of coding, 3 of which were just to look up the name of the result you wanted to pull. And that was made possible because the Barcode Scanner application is designed to be able to scan barcodes for whatever other applications may need it.
More important, our app is completely decoupled from the BarcodeScanner app. There’s no integration- in fact, neither application is checking to verify that the other exists. If the user preferred, they could remove “Barcode Scanner” and replace it with a competing app. As long as that app supported the same intent, functionality would remain the same. This decoupling is important. It’s the easy way. It’s the lazy way. It’s the Android way.
Sharing Data Using Intents
One of the most inherently useful Android intents is the Share intent. You can let the user share data to any service they want, without writing the sharing code yourself, simply by creating a share intent.
... and starting it with a chooser:
With these 5 lines of code, you get to bypass authenticating, credential storage/management, web API interaction via http posts, all sorts of things. Where by “bypass”, I mean “have something else take care of.” Like the barcode scanning intent, all you really had to do was declare that you have something you’d like to share, and let the user choose from a list of takers. You’re not limited to sending text, either. Here’s how you’d create an intent to share an image:
Note that just by using setType() to set a MIME type, you’ve filtered down the list of apps to those that will know what to do with an image file.
Intents over Integration
Think about this for a second. By making the simple assumption that any user of any service (Task Manager, Social Network, Photo sharing site) already has some app on their phone that can share to that service, you can leverage the code that they’ve already written. This has several awesome implications:
Avoid One-Off Integrations
For each pro of the Intent approach, integrating support to post to these services one-at-a-time has a corresponding con.
You will be judged harshly by your users. And deservedly so.
Ice Cream Sandwich makes it even easier
With the release of ICS, a useful tool for sharing called ShareActionProvider was added to the framework, making the sharing of data across Android applications even easier. ShareActionProviders let you populate lists of custom views representing ACTION_SEND targets, facilitating (for instance) adding a “share” menu to the ActionBar, and connecting it to whatever data the user might want to send.
Doing so is pretty easy. Configure the menu items in your Activity’s onCreateOptionsMenu method, like so:
Note that you can specify a history file, which will adapt the ordering of share targets based on past user choices. One shared history file can be used throughout an application, or different history files can be used within the same application, if you want to use a separate history based on what kind of data the user wants to share. In the above example, a custom history file is used. If you wish to use the default history for the application, you can omit that line entirely.
This will help optimize for an important feature of the ShareActionProvider: The user’s most common ways to share float to the top of the drop-down, with the least used ones disappearing below the fold of the “See More” button. The most commonly selected app will even become a shortcut right next to the dropdown, for easy one-click access!
You’ll also need to define a custom menu item in XML. Here’s an example from the ActionBar Dev Guide.
And with that, you can have an easy sharing dropdown that will look like the screenshot here. Note that you get the nice standard three-dots-two-lines “Share” glyph for free.
Remember: Smart and Easy
The share intent is the preferred method of sharing throughout the Android ecosystem. It’s how you share images from Gallery, links from the browser, and apps from Android Market. Intents are the easiest path to writing flexible applications that can participate in a rapidly expanding ecosystem, but they’re also the smart path to writing applications that will stay relevant to your users, letting them share their data to any service they want, no matter how often their preferences change over time. So take a step back and stop worrying about if your user wants to tweet, digg, post, email, im, mms, bluetooth, NFC, foo, bar or baz something. Just remember that they want to share it. Android can take it from there.
New Social APIs in Android ICS

[We’re trying something new; There’s a post over on Google+ where we’ll host a discussion of this article. Daniel Lehmann has agreed to drop by and participate. Come on over and join in!]
With Android Ice Cream Sandwich, we set out to build software that supports emotional connections between humans and the devices they carry. We wanted to build the most personal device that the user has ever owned.
The first ingredient in our recipe is to show users the people that they care about most in a magazine-like way. High-resolution photos replace simple lists of text.
The second ingredient is to more prominently visualize their friends’ activities. We show updates from multiple sources wherever a contact is displayed, without the need to open each social networking app individually.
Android is an open platform, and in Ice Cream Sandwich we provide a rich new API to allow any social networking application to integrate with the system. This post explains how apps like Google+ use these APIs, and how other social networks can do the same.
A few basics
Since Eclair (Android 2.0), the system has been able to join contacts from different sources. Android can notice if you are connected to the same person and different networks, and join those into aggregate contacts.
Essential terms to understand throughout the remainder of this post are:
While users deal with contacts, sync adapters work with their raw contact rows. They own the data inside a raw contact, but by design it is left up to Android to properly join raw contact rows with others.
Contacts sync adapters have a special xml file that describes their content, which is documented in the Android SDK. In the following paragraphs, we’ll assume this file is named contacts.xml.
The Android SDK also contains the application SampleSyncAdapter (and its source code) that implements everything mentioned in here in an easy to understand way.
High resolution photos
In Android versions prior to Honeycomb (3.0), contact photos used to be 96x96. Starting with ICS, they now have a thumbnail (which is the 96x96 version) and a display photo. The display photo’s maximum size can vary from device to device (On Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S, it is currently configured to be 256x256, but expect this to vary with future devices). The size as configured can be queried like this:
This value is useful if you need to query the picture from the server (as you can specify the right size for the download). If you already have a high resolution picture, there is no need for any resizing on your side; if it is too big, the contacts provider will downsample it automatically.
Up until now, pictures were written using a ContentValues object, just like all the other data rows of the raw contact. While this approach is still supported, it might fail when used with bigger pictures, as there is a size limit when sending ContentValues across process boundaries. The prefered way now is to use an AssetFileDescriptor and write them using a FileOutputStream instead:
For best results, store uncompressed square photos and let the contacts provider take care of compressing the photo. It will create both a thumbnail and a display photo as necessary.
This API is available on API version 14+. For older versions, we recommend to fallback to the old method using ContentValues and assuming a constant size of 96x96.
The API for update streams is the biggest new addition for contacts in Ice Cream Sandwich. Sync adapters can now enrich their contact data by providing a social stream that includes text and photos.
This API is intended to provide an entry point into your social app to increase user engagement. We chose to only surface the most recent few stream items, as we believe that your social app will always be the best way to interact with posts on your network.
StreamItems rows are associated with a raw contact row. They contain the newest updates of that raw contact, along with text, time stamp and comments. They can also have pictures, which are stored in StreamItemPhotos. The number of stream items per raw contact has a limit, which on the current Nexus devices is set to 5, but expect this number to change with future devices. The limit can be queried like this:
When displayed in the People app, stream items from all participating raw contacts will be intermixed and shown chronologically.
The following function shows how to add a stream item to an existing raw contact:
You can also specify an action that should be executed when a stream item or one of its photos is tapped. To achieve this, specify the receiving Activities in your contacts.xml using the tags
Update streams are available on API version 15+ and are intended to replace the StatusUpdate API. For previous versions, we recommend that you fall back to the StatusUpdates API, which only shows a single text item and no pictures.
Ice Cream Sandwich is the first version of Android that supports the “Me” contact, which is prominently shown at the top of the list of the new People app. This simplifies use-cases that used to be a multi-tap process in previous versions — for example, sharing personal contact data with another person or “navigating home” in a navigation app. Also it allows applications to directly address the user by name and show their photo.
The “Me” profile is protected by the new permissions
The entry point to the new API is ContactsContract.Profile and is available on API version 14+.
Previously, connecting with users on a social network involved opening the respective social networking app, searching for the person and then connecting (“Friend”, “Follow” etc.). Ice Cream Sandwich has a much slicker approach: When looking at an existing contact in the People application, the user can decide to add this person to another network as well. For example, the user might want to follow a person on Google+ that they already have as a contact in Gmail.
Once the user taps one of the “Add connection” commands, the app is launched and can look for the person using the information that is already in the contact. Search criteria are up to the app, but good candidates are name, email address or phone number.
To specify your “Add connection” menu item, use the attributes
Be sure to use the same verb as you typically use for adding connections, so that in combination with your app icon the user understands which application is about to be launched.
The “Add connection” functionality is available on API version 14+.
High-resolution pictures need a lot of space, and social streams quickly become outdated. It is therefore not a good idea to keep the whole contacts database completely in sync with the social network. A well-written sync adapter should take importance of contacts into account; as an example, starred contacts are shown with big pictures, so high-resolution pictures are more important. Your network might also have its own metrics that can help to identify important contacts.
For all other contacts, you can register to receive a notification which is sent by the People app to all sync adapters that contribute to a contact whenever the contact’s detail page is opened. At that point, you can provide additional information. As an example, when the Google+ sync adapter receives this notification, it pulls in the high-resolution photo and most recent social stream posts for that user and writes them to the contacts provider. This can be achieved by adding the
When this Intent is launched, its
These notifications are available with API version 14+.
With Ice Cream Sandwich, we improved key areas around high resolution photos and update streams, and simplified the creation of new connections.
Everything outlined in here is done using open APIs that can be implemented by any network that wants to participate. We’re excited to see how developers take advantage of these new features!

Levels in Renderscript

[This post is by R. Jason Sams, an Android Framework engineer who specializes in graphics, performance tuning, and software architecture. —Tim Bray]
For ICS, Renderscript (RS) has been updated with several new features to simplify adding compute acceleration to your application. RS is interesting for compute acceleration when you have large buffers of data on which you need to do significant processing. In this example we will look at applying a levels/saturation operation on a bitmap.
In this case, saturation is implemented by multiplying every pixel by a color matrix Levels are typically implemented with several operations.
A simple implementation of this might look like:
This code assumes a bitmap has been loaded and transferred to an integer array for processing. Assuming the bitmaps are already loaded, this is simple.
Once the data is processed with the loop, putting it back into the bitmap to draw is simple.
The full code of the application is around 232 lines when you include code to compute the constants for the filter kernel, manage the controls, and display the image. On the devices I have laying around this takes about 140-180ms to process an 800x423 image.
What if that is not fast enough?
Porting the kernel of this image processing to RS (available at android-renderscript-samples) is quite simple. The pixel processing kernel above, reimplemented for RS looks like:
It takes far fewer lines of code because of the built-in support for vectors of floats, matrix operations, and format conversions. Also note that there is no loop present.
The setup code is slightly more complex because you also need to load the script.
This code creates the RS context. It then uses this context to create two memory allocations to hold the RS copy of the bitmap data. Last, it loads the script to process the data.
Also in the source there are a few small blocks of code to copy the computed constants to the script when they change. Because we reflect the globals from the script this is easy.
Earlier we noted that there was no loop to process all the pixels. The RS code that processes the bitmap data and copies the result back looks like this:
The first line takes the script and processes the input allocation and places the result in the output allocation. It does this by calling the natively compiled version of the script above once for each pixel in the allocation. However, unlike the dalvik implementation, the primitives will automatically launch extra threads to do the work. This, combined with the performance of native code can produce large performance gains. I’ll show the results with and without the gamma function working because it adds a lot of cost.
800x423 image with gamma correction
These large gains represent a large return on the simple coding investment shown above.

Today I’m thrilled to announce the beta launch of Android Training — a collection of classes that we hope will help you to build better Android apps.
Each class explains the steps required to solve a problem, or implement a feature, with plenty of code snippets and sample code for you to use within your own apps.
We’re starting small and this is just the beginning for Android Training. Over the coming months we will be increasing the number of classes available, as well as introducing over-arching courses and sample apps to further help your development experience.
Helping developers build great apps is what the Android Developer Relations team is all about, so we’re excited to see how you use these classes to make your apps even better.
We’d love to know what you think of these classes, and what classes you’d like to see next.
Add Voice Typing To Your IME
بازدید : 315 مرتبه
[This post is by Luca Zanolin, an Android engineer who works on voice typing. — Tim Bray]
A new feature available in Android 4.0 is voice typing: the difference for users is that the recognition results appear in the text box while they are still speaking. If you are an IME developer, you can easily integrate with voice typing.
To simplify the integration, if you download this library and modify your IME as described below, everything will work smoothly on any device with Android 2.2 or later. On 4.0+, users will get voice typing, and earlier versions will use standard voice recognition; the difference is illustrated below.
To see how to integrate voice typing you can take a look at this sample IME. The IME is really simple and contains only one button: a microphone. By pressing the microphone, the user triggers voice recognition.
Here are the steps that you need to follow to integrate voice recognition into your IME.
Download the library
Download this library and add it to your IME APK.
Create the voice recognition trigger
Add the microphone icon to your IME
You need to modify the UI of your IME, add a microphone icon, and register an OnClickListener to trigger voice recognition. You can find the assets inside the sample IME. The microphone icon should be displayed only if voice recognition is installed; use VoiceRecognitionTrigger#isInstalled().
If your IME supports multiple languages, you can specify in which language recognition should be done as a parameter of startVoiceRecognition().
Notify the trigger when your IME starts
When your IME starts, you need to notify the trigger, so it can insert into the text view any pending recognition results.
Modify your AndroidManifest
In order to start a voice recognition through the Intent API, the library uses a service and an activity, and you need to add them into your manifest.
Update the microphone icon dynamically (optional)
This step is optional, but you should implement it if possible as it will improve the user experience. Voice recognition requires network access, and if there is no network, your IME should notify the user that voice recognition is currently disabled. To achieve this, you need to register the VoiceRecognitionTrigger.Listener and enable/disable the microphone accordingly.
And add this permission into your manifest:
That’s all there is to it
Voice recognition makes it easy for users to do more with their Android devices, so we appreciate your support in adding it to your IMEs.
10 Billion Android Market Downloads and Counting

[This post is by Eric Chu, Android Developer Ecosystem. —Dirk Dougherty]
One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing. This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads—with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month. We can’t wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012.
To celebrate this milestone, we partnered with some of the Android developers who contributed to this milestone to make a bunch of great Android apps available at an amazing price. Starting today for the next 10 days, we’ll have a new set of awesome apps available each day for only 10 cents each. Today, we are starting with Asphalt 6 HD, Color & Draw for Kids, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro, Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity and Swiftkey X.
Of course, none of these apps would have existed if it weren’t for the developers who created them. Every day, these developers continue to push the limits on what’s possible and delight us in the process. For that, we thank them.
Please join us in this 10-day celebration and check in every day to see what new apps our developer partners are making available on Android Market—for only a dime.

Unbrick bricked unidentified Chinese tablet
بازدید : 244 مرتبه
Hello, this is my first post.
I am a big Android noob...
I bought a used Chinese tablet off Craigslist a long while ago and never used the pad much. Basically because it did not have the Market installed and anything. So I found out about rooting and how to install the market, even though I did not even know who the manufacturer of the Pad is ^^.
I rooted it with an app whose name I forgot, somthing z4....? Like, I rooted it directly via the app on the device. Then I followed some guides I googled to install Appmarket, Gmail and so on. Everything worked fine, and I was using the tab for like a week. But now, just reading a PDF on it, the system stopped working. When I reset the device, only the Green Android Logo shows up, then the system hangs. So I figure this means it is bricked.
Any help on what tablet it is, how I can unbrick it etc is superhighly appreciated.
See the attached photos for details and thanks on ahead!

Temple Run: It’s Finally Here
بازدید : 371 مرتبه
If you have any friends with an iPhone or iPad, then you’ve heard of Temple Run. In the unbelievably addicting game, you control a man named Guy Dangerous who is running away from demon monkeys after stealing an idol from a temple. The player must navigate the pathway while dodging obstacles and picking up coins to buy powerups.
The smash iOS hit has finally made its way to Android. Let’s check it out and see whether it lives up to the hype.
When each game begins, the player takes the idol from the temple and begins running away from the monkeys. The game starts out easy with a tutorial, teaching you how to navigate the paths. To go left and right, simply swipe left and right. To jump, swipe up; to slide, swipe down. The only other control involved is tilting the device left and right to move the player sideways on the path.
While running away from the monkeys, the player must jump over obstacles such as tree branches or gaps in the path, slide under obstacles such as fences or fire, and do all this while collecting as many coins as possible. There are three different types of paths, each with different obstacles for you to dodge.
Sounds easy, right? Wrong. Each round starts off slow and starts to build up speed as you make it farther and farther. Soon, you’re swiping so fast you don’t even have time to think about anything besides what the next obstacle is!
While attempting to not die, there are also a lot of objectives to achieve. They start off really easy, such as making it 500m before dying or collecting 100 coins before dying and soon progress to seemingly impossible tasks of running 10,000m, collecting 5,000 coins or scoring 10,000,000 points. Each time you successfully complete an objective, your multiplier goes up by 1. The higher your multiplier is, the higher your score will be at the end of each game.
Between rounds, the player can use their hard-earned coins to purchase various items. The most important of these items are the power-ups, which appear randomly during gameplay. These powerups range from Coin Magnets that will collect the coins for you to Boosts that will jump you ahead a certain distance. You can upgrade all of the power-ups to make them even more helpful.
The second type of item you can buy in the shop are utilities: single-use items that can really help you rack up the points. For example, one of the utilities will boost you ahead 1000m at the start of the game. This could help you get a lot of points and complete objectives.
Getting tired of Guy Dangerous? You can unlock various other characters (by paying a LOT of coins) to run with instead.
Temple run also includes in-app purchases of coins if you want that extra boost. 2,500 coins will cost you $0.99, and 200,000 coins will cost you $19.99. This prices are steep, but we have to give Imangi Studios credit for making the game freemium instead of $0.99 as it originally was on iOS when it came out.
The performance of Temple Run in its first version was a real shame. The app crashed and lagged constantly. Imangi put out an update a few days later that fixed the bugs, and I really have to hand it to them for such a quick fix.
If you hadn’t heard of Temple Run before this review, I know what you’re thinking: “Wouldn’t this get boring after about 5 minutes?” Frankly, I find it impossible to stop playing. Every time you die, it’s too easy to start another game to try to beat your score, or unlock new power-ups. Imangi Studios did a great job making such a simple idea into a massive cross-platform hit.
There were a bunch of bugs in the original version, but these were fixed extremely quickly and successfully. Other Android developers should take note!
I give Temple Run for Android a 9/10 for being so addictive and never getting old. The game itself is awesome and addicting and gives its iOS counterpart a run for its money.
10 of the Best Photo-Sharing Apps for Android
بازدید : 421 مرتبه
This article was originally posted in November 2011. This week, Instagram was finally released on Android; some people love it, but others are unimpressed. We’ll have a full review for you soon, but in the meantime, if you were underwhelmed, you might like to check out the alternatives…
Photo-sharing is a booming market on mobile platforms, with all manner of services popping up almost on a weekly basis. Many such apps, especially on Android, are perhaps the ripples from the splash created by the iPhone photo-sharing titan Instagram. The good news is that Instagram plan an Android release in the future. However, until we see what they have to offer us Android users, there is still a huge interest in sharing pictures effectively.
This round-up aims to present an overview of arguably the best photo-sharing platforms available on Android. Now, this includes apps that focus most heavily on pictures, rather than the far larger social networks such as Google+, Facebook and Twitter which serve a wider purpose. These apps are more dedicated to sharing pictures, and make it as easy as possible to do so from your mobile phone. This round-up also doesn’t include purely photo-editing apps; apps like Pixlr-o-matic and BeFunky are very cool, but there is less focus on sharing and do not provide the same kind of platform to share pictures on.
Here you’ll see some big names, some new names, and some names you might not have heard of… until now. Read on for some truly excellent photo-sharing apps you’ll want to check out!
Lightbox is a relatively new photo sharing platform from former Google and YouTube product manager Thai Tran. Lightbox is a service with extremely rich UI and comes with a built-in camera. The app includes a host of cool filters and lets users post, not only to your Lightbox profile, but also Flickr, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and FourSquare.
The main draw for Lightbox is the UI. It’s rich, buttery, responsive and beautiful to use. A great stand-out feature lets you view users pictures from other social networks within the Lightbox app. Oddly you cannot yet share your Lightbox wall externally, but the app’s still in development so I expect the service to improve over time.
EyeEm is a rather cute photo-sharing platform with phenomenally beautiful UI. It’s light, smooth and simple to use. You can also take photos from within the app itself and add cool filters. You can view live feeds, see what pictures have been taken around your location and share with other social networks.
The UI looks gorgeous in EyeEm but it needs some tweaking for it to be a finished product in my opinion. It virtually insists you put a title and location on your pictures which can be a bit annoying when you want to upload something on the go. It has bags of potential though so definitely worth a look.
Flickr is arguably the biggest and best known of the photo-sharing platforms and its internet tenure totals nearly 7 years. Owned by Yahoo, the service has only quite recently released an official Android client. The app includes an alternative camera with filters and useful tagging functions. Flickr is both smooth and responsive and allows for a speedy turnaround from taking the picture to uploading.
I’m always quite impressed with the UI and functionality of Yahoo apps – their email client is also superb – and the Flickr app complements this. For someone who uses Flickr a great deal this would be an essential download, allowing access to pictures, albums and contacts in one easy-to-use app. For new users it offers the stability and support of an internet behemoth, although it still lacks a variety of features contained in other services.
LiveShare by Cooliris is another photo sharing network that has both a mobile and web service. Cooliris is well known for its rich web interfaces and while this is transferred to the LiveShare web service, the mobile offering is unfortunately quite basic. You can upload pictures quite easily, add friends, view streams etc but the app feels a little unfinished and lacks a genuine community feel. The app works quite well, but the UI is quite simplistic and feels veritably archaic compared to their web suite.
Being a creation of Cooliris, LiveShare should have lots of potential and will potentially pick up a lot of users, so on that basis it might be worth checking out if you’re thinking about engaging with a new photo-sharing service. However, as it stands, there are better apps out there.
Path should have been the ‘next big thing’. Lauded as such, the service was blogged about extensively and there was a genuine excitement about its release. The app lets you share photos with family and friends and interact around those pictures. This gives the pictures more meaning and interest and it’s a great way of securely sharing apps with the people you want to share with. However Path initially held off the release and then along came Google+. Path was launched two days after the search giant’s new social offering, and sadly it practically became irrelevant before it was released. If only they had released it a few weeks earlier!
The app still works fine, and for users who aren’t fussed with joining the Google+ revolution, the app is still a great way to share pictures with the people you care about. The UI and options are quite simple but work well and the app is stable, it just might feel like a bit of a let-down if you use Google+ for this purpose.
Photobucket is another significant internet photo-sharing site who have released a Android client. The app allows you to upload pictures to the site or download pictures from it, as well as sharing them to the likes of Twitter and Facebook. The Photobucket Corporation have additionally released a separate application, called Snapbucket, which lets you edit and add filters and frames to your photos.
It’s perhaps natural for existing Photobucket users to migrate to the Android client. New users will note the rich UI the app offers and the ability to tag photos, which is superb if you have a lot of images. Viewing pictures is a genuinely pleasant experience on the app and there is an auto-upload feature – similar to that which is offered by the Google+ app. On that basis, if a user is looking for a no-fuss solution for storing and sharing apps, Photobucket has a stable web presence and functions well, making it well worth consideration.
Picplz is a very popular Android photo-sharing service, and while it’s probably not the best I found far more of my friends using the service than others. With permissions, the app lets you see which of your Twitter followers already use the picplz, so you can quickly generate a number of people to share with who will already be familiar to you.
The app is simple to use, but lacks the kind of UI and editing options you see in other apps. However, it would seem you are more likely to find friends already subscribed to the service so it might be worth checking out if you aren’t keen on building a new set of followers/friends to share your pictures with.
Snapr is a photosharing app with a strong community feel. You can upload pictures and share them across various social networks as well as the Snapr website itself. There is much emphasis on geographical location and sharing images from specific places. The website presents a rich geographical map of images which looks superb, it has a real next-gen feel about it.
With the popularity of services like FourSquare and Gowalla, services like Snapr seem to be another logical step. The UI is nice and the app is simple to use, and provides cool editing tools to finish your pictures off. The size of the Snapr community is relatively small as it is a newish service, but should grow with time.
Streamzoo has a busy photo-sharing community which lets you ‘Like’ other users photos. Each like you receive wins you a point and they have daily, weekly and monthly leaderboards. On top of this the app lets you add filters, effects, frames and tilt-shifts to your pictures. All this is complimented by a great UI and the ability to share your creations with other social networks.
Of all these photo-sharing apps, I found Streamzoo to have probably the strongest community feel to it, and some genuinely brilliant photos too. Add the effects and filters, multi-platform support, leaderboards and UI, it’s a powerful way to share pictures on Android. The service is still relatively new, but if it maintains the momentum it has, I can see it growing to become a huge contender in the photo-sharing arena.
Trover is another photo-sharing app with emphasis on location. The app offers a rich UI and is multi-platform, so expect a fair few iPhone users on there too. The app feels incredibly polished and intuitive to use. The service lets you ‘visually explore’ the areas around you which has a very localised and very real feel about it, making for an engaging user experience.
Trover might not be the kind of app you share or store personal family pictures from, but if you’re keen on travel and taking cool pictures on the go, this is a great way to share snaps and memories while you do so.
There is a veritable smorgasbord of cool and useful photo-sharing apps in the Android Market; this is just a selection of the better ones available. Here we are again with a fresh batch of 60 more wallpaper images for your phone (or tablet or even your desktop for that matter). A lot of the images we have linked are available in a variety of resolutions and will therefore suit your needs just fine. Given the crazy variety of screen sizes and resolutions on Android today, you will most probably need to crop the image to fit your screen. Shouldn’t be a problem though, since the OS should take care of letting you do that at the right time.
Personally, I came to use ADWLauncher EX very late indeed; after being smitten with LauncherPro for a while, but disappointed when the development on that launcher ceased, I went looking for something else and found ADWLauncher EX. I remain completely open to new launchers and persist in trying new ones out. However, time and time again I always return to ADWLauncher EX. Why do I do this? Why keep coming back? Read on for more…
HTC has always held a place of honor in the Android community in general. Since the launch of the Dream, they have grown bigger and stronger and have not looked back. While still holding an extremely influential place in the smartphone industry, they have evolved from their humble beginnings into one of the industry’s largest innovators.
However, at this year’s Mobile World Congress, HTC’s launch of the One series of smartphones signalled a shift in philosophies that had served them well for the past couple of years, but was starting to show signs of weakness. I believe that this change is definitely for the better, and indicates exciting times ahead for HTC, consumers and developers.

March 7th was a bit of a milestone for me – it was the first time in my life that I had reserved and bought an Apple product straight after it was launched. Normally I am a bit dubious when it comes to technology, and before investing in a new gadget, I like to read countless reviews about it to really ascertain whether I’m getting the best value for money. But when the new iPad was announced I was certain that I could trust my instinct, took the plunge, and bought it outright without even reading one single review.
The features were certainly worth shouting about – that all-new, highly anticipated retina display and a beefed-up A5X processor with more powerful capabilities. All sounding good so far, I thought to myself. Then, the bombshell dropped – the new iPad will have 4G support (LTE), allowing blisteringly fast download speeds that makes 3G look ancient and sluggish.
Okay, so you’ve got your amazing new “resolutionary” iPad and you’re looking for the best way to show off the powerful display. I mean really, you’re going to want some breathtaking wallpapers and backgrounds that are the same resolution as your new iPad to go along with the device – so that people can see how great it is. Well you’re in luck, because I’ve managed to gather 100 of the best iPad Retina-optimized wallpapers, saving you all the work of searching the entire World Wide Web for them.
We all have the capacity to be creative, it’s in our very nature.
The iPad is a wonderful tool for creation is almost every sphere you can imagine, from expressing poetry to capturing artistic ideas, from exploring musical invention to manipulating captured light. Whether you consider yourself a creative professional, or are simply a person who loves to dream and imagine, there are hundreds of awesome iPad apps to help you do just that.
Exercise your mind, make something new today!
Check. Check. Is this thing on? Hello everyone. If you’re a developer of iPad applications, then today, I’m talking to you. More specifically, the one’s who shouldn’t snooze through today’s address are the iPad game developers, but what I want to talk about applies to a wide range of apps.
I come to you today with a problem that I’ve been putting a great deal of thought into over the last few months. You see, I’m what the tech world might call a “dinosaur.” I got my iPad (the original iPad) around Christmas time the year it came out. This was, if you don’t recall, only months before the iPad 2 was released. I’ve watched as the new iPads and the apps developed for them have gotten better, and I can’t help but feel like I’m being left in the dust – specifically, regarding graphics.

Microsoft is under tremendous pressure from multiple fronts. Every vertical of the company’s business is facing steadfast competition from battle hardened brands like Google and Apple. Frankly, they missed the smartphone revolution and it looked like they were about to lose the desktop and tablet revolution to the Mac and iPad.
For a company deeply entrenched in bureaucracy, Microsoft bounced back with the stunning Windows Phone 7 and now, Windows 8. Windows 8 is designed to offer the familiar user experience of the past and a brand new one for the future. Join me after the break to find in detail what the future of Windows holds for you.
Is this the end of the ultraportable as we know it? Not so, I say! In addition to the fresh arrival of the buffed up ‘ultrabook’, the netbook category has been bolstered by an arrival from Dell-owned purveyor of gaming systems, Alienware.
The group, renowned for its reputation in building high-powered gaming systems, surprised us in 2010 with the m11x, which could probably be the world’s first ‘Gaming Netbook’. Those two words I thought I’d never see together, and now with the m11x in it’s third revision, I thought I’d see if it lives up to its promising nickname.
It’s not at all a secret that if you live your digital life within the clouds of technology and the internet that you spend a significant amount of time transfixed to your computer screen.
Though with lesser fears of the age old ‘square-eyes’ myth, a common symptom of late-night hours-long continuous gazing at your computer monitor is eye-strain. It happens to everyone, but what if not using your computer as much for extended periods of time at night is not an option?
Well, this is where F.lux comes in.
The PDF is one popular file type to exchange different types of information. Mostly eBooks, article pages or simply a collection of images. To open and view PDF files you need of course a PDF viewer.
There are many of them, but I picked out the ones which I think are the most popular and useful.
Best of iPhone.AppStorm
How can I introduce League of Evil 2? As a sequel to one of my favorite iOS games? As a difficult, well-designed platformer? How about as a testament to the responsiveness of the iPhone’s touch screen? League of Evil 2 is all of those things and more. I had the chance to review the original game a while back, so I think that it’s only appropriate for me to take a look at this, the hot-off-the-press sequel.
The only thing I need to ask is this: are you ready for some hardcore, evil scientist butt-kickin’? I mean, not physically, obviously. What did evil scientists ever do to you?
It seems as if word games and iOS come hand in hand. As with all types of applications, there are several different word games out in the App Store. However, there are only a few that stand out from the rest of them.
This is where Scramble with Friends comes into the picture. The ever-so-popular ‘With Friends’ series of games has just expanded with this new release, Boggle’s iOS counterpart. It’s yet another stellar iOS application from Zynga, but what makes it so great? Read more about it after the break.
Last week, Apple dropped a few big products our direction. We saw a new AppleTV, 1080P video for true HD content, a new iPad and even more. And then there was iPhoto, the latest and greatest piece of software for the iPad that allows you to edit your pics right there on the device. Oh, and it’s a universal app too, so it’s on the iPhone! Yay!
But how would an app that’s built to perform well on the expansive screen of the iPad work with the iPhone? Let’s file down those fingertips and find out.
As most of you probably know, Apple held a press event this past Wednesday, and they introduced the new AppleTV and the new iPad. Note, that’s note the AppleTV 3 or iPad 3 as some had expected, but just the new iPad.
So what does this mean for the next iPhone? Will we see an iPhone 5, iPhone 4G LTE or just the “new†iPhone? It may not sound important, but it kinda is.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ll have heard of Basecamp being described as the project management app to rule them all. Built from the ground up in 2004 to help users complete projects without getting in their way, 37signals‘ Basecamp has been a runaway success. It has become the weapon of choice for software companies, universities, design agencies, freelancers and everyone in between, because it did one thing well: helping teams work together on projects. Since then it has helped manage over 8 million projects.
Having learned a few things along the way, the team behind Basecamp gave it a fresh coat of paint and a few tweaks under the hood. Naturally, as users (and ardent fans) of this wonderful app, we just had to take a closer look. I went ahead and signed up for the trial to create a new project and kick the tyres on this redesign. Hop in and let’s take a ride through some of the major updates to Basecamp.
As most of you know that read this site, there is a huge movement toward cloud based computing. With the rise of applications like Evernote and Dropbox, people are starting to put more and more of their documents and media in the cloud. With this rise, comes devices like the Doxie Go scanner that make the transition to the cloud that much easier for people.
For those of you that don’t know, Doxie has been around since 2009.They came out with their first scanner that year and I decided I had to try it out and I liked it, but it still had some quirks. Then fast forward a few years to this January and Doxie introduced the Doxie Go + WIFI. Paul and the team over at Doxie were kind enough to give me a review unit to test out and let me tell you, I have been loving this thing.
Remember that picture you shared last fall? Or the link you shared in 2009? How about the note you write in CloudApp and shared on Twitter? Or that article that was about … ramen noodles. You shared it, you’re sure. Now how in the world can you find it? Facebook and Twitter’s search sure won’t help you, and it’s no where to be found on your computer.
Welcome to 2012. Back in 1995, folders were enough to organize the digital things you wanted to keep, as they were all on your computer. Bookmarks helped a bit as we transitioned to a world where the web mattered more than files on our devices. Native desktop search made it relatively easy to find our files and favorites. But today, most of the digital things you really want to keep up with are on your social network profiles, and for the most part, are wildly inaccessible and incredibly difficult to find when you want.
It’s time for a new way to organize and find the digital things that really matter to us, no matter where we shared and stored them online. We’ve looked at Otixo, a web app to combine cloud storage services, but it’s still more focused on the old files-and-folders viewpoint. What about the social media part of our lives, that in some ways is often a more important part of people’s digital lives than static files today? That’s where Jolicloud Me comes in.
Sometimes email and Facebook and Twitter and everything else isn’t enough. Sometimes, you need to send an SMS. For many of us, that sometimes is more often than we might think; no wonder unlimited SMS plans are still in vogue most places. When you send SMS messages that turn into a conversation, you can quickly send more messages than you even realize. And even though smartphones keep threatening to make SMS obsolete, the frank truth is that SMS is here to stay until everyone you ever txt has an internet connection on their phone and is using the same messaging app.
So you need to send an SMS, but pulling out your phone to txt while you’re sitting at your computer seems rather odd. Why not put the larger keyboard to use, and just send an SMS from your desktop? There’s a number of apps and sites that let you send free online SMS messages, but there’s one you likely already have open: Gmail. If you didn’t know you could send SMS messages right from Gmail, keep reading to see how you can sta in touch with everyone through Gmail, even if they don’t have email on their phones.

This post is the answer to the first question that any new Mac user will ask: which apps are the best? The next time someone asks you this question, don’t think twice, just send them here.
We’ve spent hours and hours browsing the web, combing the Mac App Store and wandering through our own archives for the absolute best Mac apps around and we’ve found a whopping one hundred of them that we think you’ll love. Whether you’re looking for a screenshot utility, a todo list or even a great game to play, we’ve got you covered. We’re not merely offering a mindless list of links either, we took the time to tell you what each app does and why we love it so you can make an informed decision. Happy downloading!
If you take a look at the Buyers Guide on MacRumors, you’ll notice that the iMac has been lying dormant for just under a year (since May 2011 to be precise), the longest period of silence since before 2008. The site recommends that any potential iMac buyers hold off for the time being, seeing as ‘updates are due soon’. This would tie in with Apple’s product refresh cycle, which usually occurs every year.
But this hibernation got me thinking about two things. Firstly, are we due to see a massive overhaul of the iMac product line sometime in May/June and secondly, have Apple forgotten about their fantastic range of desktop computers?
In some ways, the built in Mac OS X Address Book wears like an old pair of sneakers – comfortable and familiar. What it lacks in style and features, it makes up for in dependability. Over the years, updates to Mac OS X have brought numerous improvements and enhancements. Yet despite these changes, the Address Book has remained largely the same. A facelift here and there, some improved syncing capabilities, but not much to get excited about (in fact, the Lion overhaul was largely protested).
Seeing the opportunity for real feature improvement in the realm of contact management, the team at Cobook have created a unique, innovative app that breathes some life into the Address Book. If you’re looking to give some more muscle to your Address Book, Cobook will take care of the heavy lifting.
Let’s face it; buying a Mac isn’t cheap, but you can help justify some of that cost if you use only a few of these outstanding free Mac apps. I’ve included my favorite apps, from simple text editors to advanced publishing tools, which are available at no cost to you.
In addition I attempted to stay away from the apps that everyone uses, instead focusing on the apps which are either up-and-coming or gems in the rough. Read on and see if you can’t get some extra value out of your Mac!

(Cross posted on the Google Voice Blog)
Since we launched Google Voice back in 2009, we’ve supported visual voicemail so you could open the Google Voice app, see all your voicemails with text transcripts, and play them on-demand. But sometimes when I get a missed call, I don’t want to jump between my call log and the Google Voice app to see who has called me and what message they left.
So, today, we’re updating our mobile app so you can view and listen to your voicemails on demand directly from the call log on your Android phone. Your voicemails will appear alongside your outgoing, incoming, and missed calls in your phone’s call log and you can just simply touch them to play them. You can slow down the playback of the message which is great for when someone is telling you their callback number, or you even speed playback up, so you can quickly listen to longer messages.
To turn this feature on, download the latest app from Google Play and check “Voicemail display” under settings. This new feature requires Android 4.0+.

How often are you doing a Google search from your computer to find information about a place before going there? Now, next time you go to Google.com on your Android phone or iPhone, information about that place will be conveniently available under the new “Recent” icon. Calling, getting directions or seeing details about the places you just searched for is now only one tap away.
We provide this new convenience feature for users who have Web History enabled and are logged into Google when doing their search. Start by searching for a place on your PC or other devices, then login to Google.com’s mobile homepage and check the Recent icon. Information about previously searched places will be available under the Recent icon for about three days (time available extended from 24 hours on March 21).
The new “Recent” icon shows information about places you have recently searched for on any of your devices. Try swiping to the right to see more icons for other categories of places.
Next time you are heading to a place you have recently searched for, no need to worry if you can’t remember the address or phone number. Just go to Google.com on your smartphone and tap on the “Recent” icon. We hope you find this new feature useful!

There may be times when you don’t have an Internet connection on your Android device, but you still want access to a file you’ve saved in Google Docs. Now you can select any file in Google Docs to make it available offline. So regardless of whether you’re connected to the internet, you’re always connected to those files.
Even better, Google Docs automatically updates your offline files when you’re on Wi-Fi. You can also manually update files anytime you have a data connection by opening the file or tapping ‘Update’ from the Offline section of the app.
For those of you with Android tablets, we’ve also improved the Google Docs reading experience. Now, when you open a Google document on your tablet while online, you’ll get a high-resolution version of the document. Swipe left and right to flip between pages, or use the slider at the bottom to page ahead quickly.

Now playing: Faster movie search on Android and iPhone
بازدید : 357 مرتبه
(Cross-posted on the Inside Search blog)
With the December movie season in full swing, we’ve just made it even faster and easier to discover movies, showtimes and theaters, all from your smartphone. Now when you search for [movies] or your favorite theater like [century san francisco] on Google.com from your phone, you’ll see interactive results for movies in a new swipeable ribbon, with the most relevant information displayed at the top of the page.
For each movie, you’ll see the movie poster, a short summary, ratings and the nearest theaters and showtimes. Designed to help you quickly browse what’s playing in theaters now, this information instantly updates as you slide through the movie posters -- no need to wait for a page to load or to use the back button.
To learn more about a movie, tap the movie title to find details like the cast and a full summary. And if you see a play button on the movie poster, you can tap to view the official trailer. You can even buy tickets directly from your smartphone by tapping on underlined showtimes -- and skip past those long holiday box office lines!
So the next time you head out to see sagas of vampires, the world’s biggest Muppets fan, dancing penguins or nearly impossible heists, try the new interactive results for movies by visiting Google.com on your iOS or Android phone’s browser and searching for [movies], [theaters] or a movie title. This feature is available in English, in the US.

Tablet image results in new carousel view
بازدید : 263 مرتبه
(Cross-posted on the Inside Search blog)
In July, we started to evolve the Google design and experience on Android and iOS tablets by updating features like larger touch targets and enhanced image viewing to make searching faster and easier. Today, we’re building on that foundation by adding a new image carousel for viewing large image results within a few swipes.
As someone who enjoys being outdoors, I like exploring beautiful images of nature. With the new image carousel, I can discover photos of bright sea anemones or colorful lorikeet birds on my tablet in a more interactive and immersive way. Now when I tap on an image result, it’ll expand in the carousel view and I can swipe through the search results. To learn more about an image, a tap on the web page preview, title, description or URL will take me directly to the webpage. See how you can take the image carousel for a spin:
Try out the new image carousel by going to Google on your iOS or Android tablet’s browser and searching for your favorite images. This feature is currently available in over 40 languages.
I hope you enjoy searching for beautiful images in this new view.

Continuous improvements with Google Goggles 1.7
بازدید : 309 مرتبه
With Google Goggles, you can quickly add someone to your contacts, learn about paintings, translate foreign text, and even solve Sudoku. Starting today, with Goggles 1.7 for Android, we’re making your visual search experience much faster and providing better results with new features like continuous mode, improved text recognition and contributed results.
Skip the shutter with continuous mode
Continuous mode is a quick and easy new way to use Goggles. You can now get results instantly without having to take a picture - no shutter press required! Goggles will scan the scene continuously so you don’t need to worry about taking multiple pictures. The new continuous mode works best with books, products, artwork, and landmarks. Snapshot mode is still available, and has some tricks that aren’t in continuous mode yet, including translating text and adding a contact. Also, images recognized in continuous mode sessions won’t show up in your Goggles Search History, so if you’d like to refer back to something, such as a painting in a gallery you should use snapshot mode.
Goggles also scans multiple items in continuous mode
Get richer results with text recognition
Starting today, when Goggles recognizes a portion of text, you’ll get results that have a close match to the text you’ve scanned. Let’s say you’re reading a magazine article you really like and want to share it with your friends. Just point Goggles at a part of the page, and instantly find a link to an online version to share immediately or read again later. You won’t even need the entire article in the frame. Goggles will also pull up more information from pages around the web where that text is mentioned, so its easier to learn about what you’re seeing.
Goggles finds web results to provide more information
More comprehensive results with your suggestions
Since Goggles 1.4, you’ve been able to suggest better results when Goggles doesn’t recognize what you’re searching for. To date, hundreds of thousands of submissions have been made to improve Goggles. Starting today, if you choose to suggest a better result or submit a new object altogether, your suggestion could become a result for the next user who searches for a similar object with Goggles. I’ve added a snapshot of the album cover from my old band so that my fans can use Goggles to find out about our music online. Now, if a fan searches for the cover of our album, they will see the information I suggested, along with my name and link to my Google profile.
Submitting the result for my band’s album cover
Google Goggles 1.7 is available for all Android devices, but you’ll need a device running Android 2.3 or newer to use Continuous Mode. Scan the QR code below to download, or visit Android Market. Tell us what you think on our Google + page.

Voice Search arrives in the Middle East
بازدید : 239 مرتبه
Today, we are very pleased to announce the launch of Voice Search in Arabic and Hebrew for Android and iPhone users.
Users in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, UAE, and Israel can now speak Arabic and Hebrew into their phones to get search results quickly and easily. With this launch, Voice Search is now supported in 29 languages and accents in 37 countries.
When building support for Arabic and Hebrew into our language model we faced some unique challenges, including how to understand words with diacritics (accents that indicate a difference in pronunciation, a linguistic phenomenon called “Nikud” in Hebrew, and “Tashkil” in Arabic) and words appended with other words (“and” for example) that can have many different nuanced meanings.
To train our system we collected over one million utterances in Arabic and Hebrew, using the languages as they are spoken in the more populated parts of each country. For Arabic, we trained the system to recognize Gulf, Levant and Egyptian dialects. While initially we may not accurately recognize words spoken in every regional accent and dialect, one of the major benefits to Google’s cloud-based model is that the more people use Voice Search, the more accurate it becomes.
How you get started with Google Voice Search depends on what kind of phone you have. If your phone runs Android 2.2 or later, and you see the microphone icon on the Google Search widget on your homescreen, all you have to do is tap the icon to start a voice-powered search. Otherwise, you can install the Voice Search app from Android Market. Note that you can only speak one language into the app at any time and that you may need to change your language setting first.
To get Google Search App for iPhone, search for ‘Google Search App’ in the App Store or follow this link. If you already have Google Search App installed, you can enable voice search by selecting the new languages from the settings panel within the app.

Interactive weather results, now in 34 languages
بازدید : 284 مرتبه
Earlier this year, we introduced interactive weather information in mobile search results and now this feature is available in 33 more languages. Now when you search for ‘météo’, ‘tempo’, ‘날씨’, or ‘weather’ in your language, you’ll see the current temperature, humidity level and wind speed for your location. You’ll also get an overall forecast and the weather outlook for the next few days. To see weather conditions at various times throughout the day, move the slider across the next 12 hrs; that way you’ll know if you’ll need a light jacket in the afternoon or perhaps an umbrella in the evening.
Give it a try by searching Google for ‘weather’ in your language on your Android or iOS mobile device.

Gmail app for iOS available in the App Store (again)

Two weeks ago, we introduced our Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately it contained a bug which broke notifications and displayed an error message, so we removed it from the App Store. We’ve fixed the bug and notifications are now working, and the app is back in the App Store. For an overview of what’s available in the Gmail app for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, check out this blog post.
In the short time the app was public we received a lot of helpful feedback and feature requests. This included requests for everything from bigger features like multiple account support to customizations like improved notifications and mobile specific signatures.
We’re just getting started with the Gmail app for iOS and will be iterating rapidly to bring you more features, including all the ones listed above plus many more. Based on your comments we have already improved our handling of image HTML messages - they are now sized to fit to the screen and you can pinch to zoom in.
To try out the Gmail app today, install it from App Store on any iOS 4+ device. Those who already have the Gmail app released Nov 2 must uninstall or log out of the old app prior to installing the new app.
(Cross posted on the Google Translate Blog)
Back in June, we launched five new experimental Indic languages for Google Translate on the desktop and mobile webapp. Today, we’ve updated the Google Translate for iPhone app to add these new alpha languages: Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. This brings the total number of languages supported by the app to 63 languages.
The updated app supports the ability to view dictionary results for single words and to display romanizations for these new Indic languages. So even if you can’t read the script the words are written in, you can still take a shot at reading the translation.
Since these are still experimental alpha languages, you can expect translations be less fluent and include many more untranslated words than some of our more mature languages—like Spanish or Chinese—which have much more parallel data to power our statistical machine translation approach. Despite these challenges, we believe users will find these new languages helpful and we’re excited to be making them available through the Translate app.
Updates will appear in the App Store in supported countries throughout today. Google Translate for iPhone now supports text translation among 63 languages, voice input in 17 of those languages, and text-to-speech in 24 of them. Get the latest version of Google Translate for iPhone app from the App Store and start breaking down language barriers wherever you are!

بازدید : 347 مرتبه

Toshiba just announced three new tablets that will be available in May and June. Last year Toshiba marketed their tablets under the Thrive name and offered both 10-inch and 7-inch models. For 2012, all tablets will be under the Excite name. We’ve already seen the super thin Excite 10 LE released a little over a month ago, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Toshiba just unveiled the Excite 7.7 (AT175), Excite 10 (AT305), and the Excite 13 (AT335). All three tabs will come with a NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front facing camera, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It should also be noted that these will be primarily stock ICS devices with the exception of a file manager app and media player. Toshiba feels that users want stock and they are going to give it to them.
The Excite 13 (pictured above) comes with a 13.3-inch (1600 x 900) AutoBrite Backlit LED display, and yes, this is the same tablet we showed you a couple of weeks ago. It will also have a four speaker sound system, full size SD card slot, micro USB, micro HDMI, and 13 hours of battery life. It will be a little over 10mm thick and weigh about 2.2 pounds or 997 grams. This tablet is going to be great for presentations and sharing so Toshiba is including a stand (not attached) to go along with it. If you’re wondering about the TV tuner that was shown in the video from last month, it won’t be available in the U.S., but Toshiba does plan on offering it in certain markets. The Excite 13 will be available at the beginning of June and priced at $649.99 for the 32GB model and $749.99 for the 64GB model.
The Excite 10 (pictured below) comes with a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) AutoBrite Backlit LED display. It will feature stereo speakers, full size SD card slot, micro USB, micro HDMI, and 10 hours of battery life. It won’t be as thin as the Excite 10 LE as it comes in at 8.89mm. It will weigh in at 1.32 pounds or about 598 grams. It will be available in May and pricing will be $449.99 for the 16GB model, $529.99 for the 32GB model and $649.99 for the 64GB model
The Excite 7.7 (pictured below) comes with a 7.7-inch (1280 x 800) AMOLED display. It will feature stereo speakers, micro SD, micro USB, and micro HDMI. If you like thin, than you will be happy to know it’s only 7.62mm thick and weighs only 13.4 ounces or 380 grams. It will be available at the beginning of June and priced at $499.99 for the 16GB model and $579.99 for the 32GB model. Surprisingly, the Excite 7.7 will have a better display than the bigger siblings, which is why it costs $50 more than the Excite 10.

1.8GHz Tegra 4 Coming Q1 2013 According To Leaked NVIDIA Roadmap
بازدید : 321 مرتبه
We already heard that NVIDIA’s Kepler GPU is destined for more mobile pastures, and the latest rumors place it on the quad-core Tegra 4 system-on-a-chip (SoC). That’s about all we knew… until today’s leaked roadmap of what could be some of the first Tegra 4 chips. I say “could be” because the roadmap doesn’t actually mention Tegra 4 directly, but the cores listed are Cortex A15′s, not the Cortex A9′s that the Tegra 3 uses.
According to the leak, there are SoC’s ranging from 1.2GHz to 2GHz along with what seems to be recommended screen sizes from 7″ to 10″. Besides the presumed Tegra 4 chips, there is an interesting A9-based chip that seems to support on-board LTE. The first chip to be used in retail devices seems to be the 1.8GHz model, appearing Q1 next year. We’ll have to wait until summer 2013 for the rest.
RIM Stopping The Android Market “Cesspool” On The PlayBook

Reasearch In Motion has decided to drop the major bombshell and stop the ability to sideload Android apps on the Blackberry PlayBook. It’s reasoning? RIM highlights 53 percent of surveyed Android developers believe app piracy is either somewhat of a problem or a huge problem. This seems to fall in line with recent findings showing apps being published without (Android) developer consent. Here’s Alec Saunders, VP of Developer Relations summing it up best:
While it seems like it’s a direct attack on the Android platform, there’s actually some reasoning to his statement. The
Man, the past week’s news about the Motorola Droid Razr/Maxx and its pending update(s) got a bit annoying and had me starting to think that Razr owners may never actually see an ICS update at all. First we saw a leaked Best Buy memo that claimed that an ICS update was supposed to begin the following week, which we all know never happened. Then, we heard that an ICS soak test was being prepared to push out to Moto testers only to find out it was just going to be a silly 6.12.181 Gingerbread maintenance update. Here we are the following week and nothing has happened, not even the Gingerbread maintenance update. Things are starting to look a bit shaky, no?
Well, by the looks of things over at the Motorola testers’ forums, Moto is now possibly scraping the 6.12.181 maintenance update all together in lieu for the actual ICS soak test. The Moto forum manager left a message for its testers (since removed) stating the following:
So there you have it folks. Whether you can take that comment to the bank or not is still up for debate. Either way I hope this BS comes to an end soon and you patient Razr owners finally get a taste of Android’s oh-so-good Ice Cream Sandwich. We will let you know if anything else changes or if the soak test does actually get under way. In the meantime, feel free to vent your frustrations in the comments below.

Will the 7-Inch Galaxy Tab 2 be Priced at $310? QVC Seems to Think So
بازدید : 288 مرتبه
For those of you who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), I imagine you are interested to know its retail price, too. Lucky for us, an eagle-eyed Phone Arena reader spotted a QVC ad for the device before it was quickly removed from their website. According to the attached QVC screenshot, the new 7-inch Galaxy Tab will run $309.96, at least through QVC as long as details don’t change before it officially goes on sale. This price was listed for the most basic 8GB version of the device with no cellular capabilities so expect that as the base price for the 7-inch tab.
Since this info was outed by mistake one could easily think the new Samsung slates are just around the corner, but lets not forget about the most recent news of a delayed launch due to software issues. In reality, we are probably not going to see the new Sammy tabs until late April if not early March and the UK is the first country said to receive the devices. Lets hope the issues get ironed out sooner rather than later and the $310 price tag actually becomes a reality.

Facebook set to purchase Instagram for $1 Billion
بازدید : 353 مرتبه
There goes the neighbourhood! Not even a week after making its long awaited debut on Android, popular image sharing application Instagram looks set to join the Facebook family. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that an agreement has been made worth a whopping $1 billion in cash and shares that will see Facebook acquire the service pending the standard regulatory approvals.
Both parties are currently claiming that Instagram will continue to run as a separate service with no immediate plans to swallow the features up into Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg posted a statement on his blog “We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.” Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom also released a statement via his blog “The service is not going away. The Instagram app will be the same one you know and love”
It will be interesting to see how Facebook utilises Instagram in the long term. Here’s hoping the in-house application developers do a better job than they’ve managed on the always buggy Facebook for Android!
Check out the full press release after the break.
Facebook to Acquire Instagram
MENLO PARK, CALIF.-April 9, 2012-Facebook announced today that it has reached an agreement to acquire Instagram, a fun, popular photo-sharing app for mobile devices.
The total consideration for San Francisco-based Instagram is approximately $1 billion in a combination of cash and shares of Facebook. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close later this quarter.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, posted about the transaction on his Timeline:
I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.
For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.
We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram’s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.
That’s why we’re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.
We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.
These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram’s experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure.
This is an important milestone for Facebook because it’s the first time we’ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don’t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.
We’re looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we’re going to be able to build together.
Ready to meet the last screen protector you will ever need? Meet Toray’s self-repairing film that has the capability of healing minor scratches and blemishes in under ten seconds flat. The film’s self-cure coating can repair itself up to 20,000 times as long as the damage doesn’t go beyond the special elastic cushioning layer. Toray uses a wet coating method to enhance the rejuvenating properties of this PET film and according to Toray, works better in lower temperatures. This doesn’t mean you need to stick your device in the freezer to repair unwanted scratches, room temperature is what produced the ten second repair you are seeing in the above image. Speaking of the above image (although a video demo would have been nice), I guess this was the result after scratching the film with a metal brush.
This new Toray film is set to be released as a decorative layer for a few unannounced noteboooks but I imagine it wont be long before we start seeing it available for select tablets and smartphones.
Using NFC in Android
بازدید : 339 مرتبه
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a technology for data exchange between devices in close proximity. It traces its root back to RFID, where a reader drives a passive electronic tag through a magnetic field. This is a typical use case for NFC, but it can also be used by two active devices to communicate with each other.
APIs for NFC have now been added to the Android SDK, and a few phones with the NFC capability are available. I have looked into how we could use NFC to improve an existing Android application we develop. The application is targeted for cities, and one of its features is to provide information about various places of public interest, and in some cases allow reports of malfunction to be sent through the application. This feature could make use of NFC by having tags posted at the places of interest, which would allow users to get directly to the information about the place by just tapping the phone on the tag. Another possibility would be to use Peer-to-Peer data exchange to let a user running the application tap another phone. If the other phone has the application installed, it would start the application on the same activity, otherwise the other phone may be redirected to the application on Android Market.
I looked more closely at the first use case of having tags at places of interest. One initial consideration is that the number of phones with NFC is still very small. It would therefore be desirable to have an alternative way to achieve the same functionality for other phones. For this reason I also had a look at using QR codes, which can be read through the camera in the phone.
When the Android system detects an NFC device, it searches for the most suitable application to process the data. NFC only works over a very short range, so having the user select the application to use from a list is only used as a last resort, since this would typically cause the user to move the phone away from the device, and thereby break the NFC connection. Instead, the NFC API has defined several types of intents with different priorities, and with different options to filter on tag content or technology. The highest priority is given to the foreground application, which can register itself to intercept any NFC intent. This is not a good option in our application, since it would require the user to start the application before tapping the phone on the tag.
The next highest priority is applications that filter on tag content, which would work well in this case. The content could be set to anything we want, since the tags would be made specifically for our application. A standard type of content which has support for filtering in Android is URIs. To ensure that our application gets the NFC intent we could use a non-standard scheme. The host part of the URI could be used to select the activity to use within the application, and an identifier could be included as a URI parameter:
The intent filter for these NFC tags would look like this:
The same URI could also be encoded in a QR code. I used a bar code reader called ZXing which can easily be integrated with other applications. It can also do the reverse, i.e. generate a bar code image from text data which is useful for testing. There are two ways to use ZXing to get the scanned QR code into our application:
For maximum usability, both ways could be implemented, allowing the user to proceed regardless of which application was started first. The way described in 1 above is described on the ZXing web page. The second way, which is what I tried, is quite simple. Our application declares an intent filter, which is very similar to the NFC intent filter above:
The URI can then be retrieved through the getData method on the received intent, in order to extract the id parameter, and this is used to find and display the desired information.
Some of the NFC features were introduced in API level 9, and the other were introduced in API level 10. The Android SDK develper guide describes how to declare an application to require this API level as well as NFC permission and hardware. This is however not what we want for our application. We want to use NFC if it is available, but the application should install and work without NFC and on old devices at lower API levels. The NFC permission must be declared to get NFC to work when it is available. The platform will use the permission declaration to implicitly derive the NFC hardware requirement, but the application can override this by explicitly declaring that NFC hardware is not required. Finally, the required API level can be kept at a low level while still allowing the application to use the NFC features in API level 10, by using the targetSdkVersion attribute. The result is the following declarations:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.NFC" />
The application can then be compiled with the API level 10 SDK, but can still be installed on anything with API level 4 or higher. In order to make use of NFC, the application will have to use classes in the android.nfc package, which is not available before API level 9. This may cause a VerificationError on the application if it is not handled correctly. The solution is to put all dependencies on NFC into separate application classes that are only loaded on devices that actually support NFC. This works because the Dalvik VM only loads and verifies the application classes the first time any method or member in them are accessed. So even though some application classes would not compile on the API level of the device, the application will still run without errors as long as the classes using a higher API level are not touched. The application can check the API level of the device at runtime through the constant ”Build.VERSION.SDK_INT”. The application can also check if the NFC feature is available through the ”PacketManager.hasSystemFeature” method. Note that this method is only available from API level 5, so the API level must be checked first, and the feature check needs to be in a separate application class that is not loaded on lower API level devices.
The QR code alternative does not have the same problem with API levels (as the ZXing barcode reader only requires API level 3), but it will obviously only work if the barcode reader is installed. If the integration is implemented by starting the scan from ZXing, which then sends a ”VIEW” intent, then the application is not required to check anything. However in the other integration option, where the application sends an intent to the barcoder reader to initiate the scan, the application must check at runtime if the barcode reader is available. This check can be done with the ”PacketManager.queryIntentActivities” method. When the result of this check is negative, the application could disable any ”scan” button or anything else in the user interface used to initiate a scan operation. The application could also provide a link to the barcode reader in Android market to make it easy for the user to enable the QR code scanning feature. The link could be made like this:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
In summary, I found that the NFC capability could indeed be used to add a new feature to our application. It would make the application easier to use, and it could be implemented without limiting the availablility of the application to phones that have NFC hardware. If QR codes are used as a complement to NFC tags, then the same functionality could be implemented for phones without NFC.

An example of porting existing code to a custom Android device
بازدید : 288 مرتبه
It is due time for another technical post here on the blog. This post will be about porting existing c-libraries to Android, something I did as part of the dev board demos we are doing here at Enea.
Platform addition or NDK
There are two ways of bringing native code to an Android device, either add it to the platform itself and integrate it with the framework, or include it with an application package. The latter method have evolved a lot and with the release of NDK version 5 even allows you to hook directly into the application lifecycle http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/NativeActivity.html from the NDK. The NDK is useful for any application where you have need of native performance, have portable C libriaries you want to reuse or just some legacy native code that could be included in your application. The NDK integrates well with the Android SDK and is a great way to include native functionality in your application. It should be the preferred way for any application that needs to be reusable across a lot of Android devices.
The other option is to include your functionality, it may be native or Java, as an API extension for all applications to use. This will only work on devices that implement these extensions and it may be a suitable option for device builders. This is the variant that we aim for here.
Analyze the existing project
Porting native code to Android is not always straight forward, especially if we are talking about C++ code due to the fact that Android uses its own c-runtime with limited support for exceptions among other things. If you want to know more about the details of bionic there is an overview in the NDK docs.
The code I wanted to port for this project was the Enea LINX for Linux framework which is a fast IPC framework. My purpose was to be able to interact with control systems running our OSE real time operating system which also implements this kind of IPC. LINX consists of a couple of kernel driver modules, a user space library and some configuration and control utilities. It is written in C. I had created a small demo with LINX in Android before where I compiled it separately and used static linking but for this project I wanted a complete port to the Android build system. It did not have any issues with bionic compatability so the port should be straight forward.
I just want to add a short disclaimer about LINX. I use it here since it is a good example of integrating a solution into Android from kernel drivers up to the API levels. This particular piece of code does add additional IPC mechanisms to the systems which more or less messes up the security model so do not use it unless you are aware of the implications. The steps needed to port code to Android described in this post are however applicable for any type of driver/framework/library that you may want to include on your product.
Adding kernel driver modules
The first step was to add the kernel modules to the Android build. One way would have built a new kernel and include them directly but for this project I chose to keep them as separate modules. Building for the kernel is not handled by the Android build system meaning that we build them as we would do with any Linux system. The target is an Atmel based development board and in the LINX module build I provide the headers and cross compilation toolchain for that kernel and architecture.
Now for the Android specific parts. We need to add the compiled kernel modules to the platform build system in some way and create an Android.mk file that includes them in the system image when we build. Add a folder in the source tree where your project will go, device or external are suitable candidates. I created a folder called linx that will hold the entire linx port and in that I added a subfolder called modules where I place the prebuilt kernel modules. Now what we need is an Android makefile to copy them to the suitable place in the out folder for system image generation. This will look like:
LOCAL_PATH := $(my-dir)
The standard location for modules on the Android system image is System/lib/modules so that is where we copy them. If we build the platform now the build system will copy our precompiled module linx.ko to the system image that we use for our device. The next step is to make sure that we have the module installed on the system when we run it. This can either be done manually via the shell or via a script that we run during init.
In this case I have created a shell script to be launched from init.rc with the following content:
This includes installing the modules and configuring the network and LINX-link. We launched this from init.rc by adding:
The setup script is added to the system image in the same way by including it as a prebuilt target.
LOCAL_PATH := $(my-dir)
Creating Android make files for the user space code
Now that we have the drivers in place the next step is to look at porting the user space libraries. The default LINX build system uses standard GNU make files but we need to create new ones adapted to the Android build system. Start out by adding the source files needed to the linx directory created in the Android source tree. This gives the following structure:
I have the linx setup script and the main Android.mk file in the top directory and then we have the source files in separate folders and the include files in the include folder. To illustrate how the Android make files for each source component is created we can use liblinx as an example. The Android.mk file looks like:
LOCAL_PATH := $(call my-dir)
We set our sources by specifying LOCAL_SRC_FILES and the name of the library by specifying LOCAL_MODULE. We also need to supply the header files in the include directory by specifying LOCAL_C_INCLUDES. Finally this is a shared library that we are porting so use the BUILD_SHARED_LIBRARY template. This will build the library with the Android build system and add it to the system image as a shared library with the name liblinx.so.
The rest of the code is moved to the Android build system in the same way, by creating Android.mk files and specifying type and any dependencies. As another example we may look at the syntax for building the mktcpcon configuration program. This depends on the library we just created and hence the makefile looks entry looks like:
LOCAL_SRC_FILES := mktcpcon.c
Here we use the BUILD_EXECUTABLE template and we also need to specify static and shared libraries that we link against.
I hope that provides some insight in how you setup the build for an existing linux project to run on an Android system. The steps to follow are:
That wraps up my post for today. Having done this we are now able to use our added drivers and API:s from native programs running in the shell. The next step is to create a JNI layer and java library to allow regular Android applications to make use of our platform additions.
I have been away for half a year on paternal leave (nice Swedish benefit) but now it is full time Android hacking again and pushing the team to publish things. Hopefully you will see more activity here including a follow up on this post discussing applications APIs.
Working with Android on development boards
بازدید : 339 مرتبه
This will be the first of a set of post on a project we are doing where we will use an Android powered dev board to provide UI and user control features for an embedded system. I will get back to the setup in later posts but in brief it will consist of two boards, one running a traditional control system and one running a slightly adapted Android platform with extra API:s to interact with the control system. This part focuses on working with Android on dev boards in general and discusses a couple of boards in particular.
For platform level hacking the open source project provides a good start with the emulator and that is useful for things like working with the base applications and examining the framework. The emulator is however limited and for a lot of platform level work real hardware is the best way to go. For real hardware there are two routes, either use an existing phone or use some kind of development board. Existing phones are fun platforms for tinkering and enabling features in the way they to it at xda-developers and other forums. As a general lab environment they are limited since they often have very few hardware interfaces exposed and they are often locked down in ways that make interacting with them difficult.
Development boards on the other hand are often made especially for trying out new designs, connecting hardware and having easy debug access. These are often the best platform for working with low level stuff on Android. In fact most phone manufacturers start out with some kind of platform dev board to facilitate early development before they wrap everything in great looking metal and plastic.
So let us look at working with Android on embedded development boards. First you should decide on why you want to go this route. Dev boards are excellent for:
Dev boards are probably not the way to go for:
Factors to consider
Now let us say that you are still interested in working with Android on a development board. Then we get to the interesting part on deciding on which one to get. Here I would say there are a few important factors to consider:
All of these are important but do not underestimate the power of having an active community around your platform that can help you out if you run into problems. Start by looking at the above factors and note down your requirements in each aspect. And do not forget to take into account other things that I have left out in this bullet list. Once you have some idea of what you need we can start looking at what is available. And that is becoming quite a lot.
Let me start by grouping the different boards into a few categories. And here I will add in a limitation. I will mostly consider ARM-based dev boards since this is the architecture with the widest Android adoption so far and almost all commercial devices shipped so far are based on ARM. That said there is a very active community around Android on x86 and also MIPS ports. And probably a few more. The most prominent feature of any dev board is the applications processor and system on chip design that will run the actual Android system. Based on that I will use the following categories for ARM based designs:
State of the art development boards
These platforms are based on dual-core Arm Cortex A9, 1 GHz plus, system on chips with graphics acceleration and other features. In this category I am only aware of a couple of platforms that can be obtained as development boards for general purposes. Two are based on the TI Omap 4 system on chip and can be ordered either as the cheap panda board or as the more full featured Blaze kit which include touch screens and keyboard. If you are based in North America it is also possible to get the Tegra 250 dev kit from Nvidia with similar specs. These boards are interesting since they have more processing power available than anything else on the market but they are also fairly new designs with limited community track record. They may be perfect for experienced embedded hobbyists that want to build a HTPC setup or similar. If you have very little experience working with embedded development it may be better to start out with something with a longer track record and more information available on forums, blogs and wikis. For professionals you need to consider if you really need this kind of processing power in your design. Maybe advanced 3D graphics and full HD video is not part of your use case and then maybe these types of platforms will eat more power and cause more issues with advanced features than they provide benefits.
High end development boards.
These are ARM Cortex A8 based designs similar to what is powering most of the high end Android smarthphones that are available today. In this category we have a number of SoC and a large amount of development boards based on these SoCs. To mention a few of the families we have the Freescale i.Mx 515, evolution dev kit and android tool and the Texas Instruments OMAP3, most notable the Beagle board and the Zoom II dev kit. Since these run on the same CPU family (ARM Cortex A8) as most of the commercially available Android phones do and have been around for a while they are often well tested and relatively stable. This is especially true of the Omap based Beagle board which features a large developer community. The Omap on the Beagle board is also very similar to the Omap that powers the popular Motorola Droid phone. There are a number of derivatives from the Beagle with more peripherals and expansion possibilities.
Mid and low end development boards.
This is a more unexplored area but with some interesting products. Android this far has been a lot about performance and most community boards have been higher end boards but as interest for using Android outside the smartphone space is increasing so is the number of low cost platforms with support for the system. These boards are generally based on ARM926 or ARM11 CPUs and have a limited set of accellerators and peripherals. Many dev boards in this category have too little memory to run Android (128 MB RAM is some kind of current minimum but more is even better). There are some Samsung boards, something from Renesas and once again probably a lot of others. The board that we have worked with in this category is from Atmel, the AT91SAM9M10-EKES borad. While their Android community is relatively young compared to the Beagle board Atmel has a tradition of having a thriving community around their at91 platforms in general.
Some practical details
Now that we are finally past the overview we can get to the practical details on working with development boards. If you are considering to get a develoment board for Android I would suggest that you try to download and build whatever Android distribution is availble for that board before you get the hardware. The state of the distribution will tell you a lot about how hard it will be to get the hardware working later on. If there is no Android distribution available for your hardware make sure that you are aware what the porting effort will be and also analyze that the hardware will even be capable of running Android in terms of performance and memory available.
Another thing to investigate is how you will boot and run Android on the dev board. Does it contain a NAND flash or SD card interface. Is it possible to set up a network file system and boot Android from that? Having working adb tools are also very nice when working on a dev board. It is much more convenient to update just your shared library through an adb sync instead of having to build, generate a system image and flash it to the board every time you need to test an update.
Regardless of what board you choose prepare to spend some time understanding how to boot it up with your Android build. Often they are delivered with some other software as default configuration. Prepare to spend a few hours up to a few days just to get familiar with boot and flash options. How to set the jumpers in the correct state to be able reflash the board etc.
These are some impressions for three of the different boards that we have worked with so far.
The Beagle board is a very powerful board for the price ($149) and if you connect to a regular monitor and keyboard it is a very capable development platform for low level work. We have run a number of projects on this platform ranging from initial demos and driver projects to advanced research stuff. The limitations made to keep the price down are a bit annoying and nowadays I would recommend getting the updated BeagleBoard xM version instead. That will add an ethernet port and more USB ports. There are also versions and derivatives that include screens etc.
This is another OMAP based device but includes and the SoC is very similar to the BeagleBoard but it is packaged more like a real device with touch screen and keyboard.
This device is very similar to the Beagle board and shares the same attributes beyond the two things mentioned here.
I think this is a really interesting dev kit. Especially when looking at developing things that do not have the high-end smartphone level of performance requirements. Since it includes a screen and decent amount of connections it can be used as a compact demo board. We got this relatively recently and will probably base our next demo on it. After some initial hickups with the tools it is straight forward to develop on and the support from Atmel and the community seems to be growing rapidly. We still need to do some benchmarking though and see how it handles Android compared to higher end alternatives.
I hope this article provides some insight on working with Android on development boards. With the amount of Android related news currently I am sure I have missed some capable platforms. Feel free to add whatever platform you are familiar with in the comments and I will update this post with more info. Once again I would like to remind you that I have skipped entire architectures such as x86, MIPS and PowerPC in this article.
Using Android to control Lego Mindstorms
بازدید : 334 مرتبه
This is a short post on the more entertaining side of Android showing a project that the Enea team in Linköping, Sweden, prepared for an expo. It is a one minute video from the demonstration.
It is two LEGO Mindstorms robots controlled by one HTC Hero Android phone. The Hero is running an Android application written by Enea Linköping that send motor commands to the LEGO brick. LEGO has been kind enough to put a Bluetooth chip in the Mindstorms NXT controller. By using the built in demonstrational Bluetooth commands the NXT brick provides there is no need for an application to be downloaded into the NXT brick.
There was however one obstacle in the limited Bluetooth support in Android OS version 1.5 (not supporting the Bluetooth serial port profile, SPP). Instead we used the wifi capabilities on the phone to send information to an Ubuntu Linux Laptop with a TCP/IP to Bluetooth tunnel (just a raw tunnel, no logic or programming). HTC has been rumored to be releasing Android OS version 2.1 (with Bluetooth) later in february and we hope to be able to put forth a new version that skip the WiFi laptop step.
If you follow the instructions on http://source.android.com/using-eclipse you will only have a Java project and will only see the C/C++ project files as 2:nd class citizens without any indexing. I will propose a another solution that will combine the ideas from http://lorinc.blogspot.com/2006/10/how-to-mix-java-and-c-code-in-singe.html.
1. Copy the already available Java setup
$ cd <your mydroid folder>2. From Eclipse create a new C++ project File -> New -> Other, select C/C++ -> C++ Project give it a project name and uncheck "Use default location"
and give it the path to your directory (often called the mydroid dir)
Select Project Type: "Makefile project" -> "Empty Project", let the "-- Other Toolchain" be selected and press "Finish"
3. Add in Java to the same project
Close Eclipse as you will edit a file it holds open and will overwrite otherwise Now a /.project file has been created open it in a text editor and add the following:
<nature>org.eclipse.jdt.core.javanature</nature>as described here:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>Now start eclipse again, now the Java classes are available in "Project Explorer" view and C/C++ files in "C/C++ Projects" view.
One problem remain when you build it will use "make all" and that will not work and need to be changed to "make" this can be done if you right-click on the project and select "Properties"
In the "Properties" window select "C/C++ Build" and click on the "Behaviour" tab and remove "all" from all the places where available.
I still used the java heap enlargement in eclipse.ini from the first link by changing the numbers in eclipse.ini to the numbers below:
The standard eclipse from Ubuntu 9.10 (installed from synaptic) uses this file /usr/lib/eclipse/eclipse.ini you need to be root to edit it e.g.
$ sudo gedit /usr/lib/eclipse/eclipse.ini

Train Tracker - our first Android application
بازدید : 286 مرتبه
Even though application development has not been the main focus of the Enea Android Competence Center we decided to give it a try in order to widen our knowledge. For a couple of weeks we have been working on an application called Train Tracker. The application is mainly aimed to be used as an internal reference. The application shows real time train traffic information from Swedish train stations, some of the main features are:
The information presented in the application is downloaded from http://banverket.se. Unfortunately Banverket was not willing to give us API access which is why our application is parsing HTML in order to get the information. This means that the application is likely to stop working if Banverket decides to change the layout of the webpage. Right now the application works quite well and if you want to try it out you can download TrainTracker.apk here, or use your favorite barcode scanner to get it:
Keep in mind that the application language is Swedish and it can only show information from Swedish trains and train stations. Here are some screenshots from Train Tracker:
Train Tracker station activity. In this view you will find all arrivals/departures of a specific station.
Train Tracker filter activity. Here you can filter the list of arrivals/departures. Select “Spara Filter” to save the filter as a favourite. Select “Använd Filter” to apply the selected criteria.
Back at the station activity. This time filtered with the selected filter criteria and one of the departures has been expanded. Tapping the “Aktivera alarm” line will schedule an alarm for train 1067. Tapping The “Tåg 1067” line will take you to the train route activity for this train.
Train Tracker train route activity. At this view we display all train stops for a specific train. At the top of the screen a train delayed notification is received.
Global search in Google Quick Search Bar. Search hits from Train Tracker shows up together with ordinary search hits. Search hits gain higher priority in the search result list as they are selected.

Examples on extending the framework
بازدید : 267 مرتبه
This post covers a couple of examples that are available in the Android open source project that provide a good start to exploring the framework and the JNI implementations in Android. If you are working with Android Open Source Project on hardware and want to test adding new API:s to the platform without breaking the structure these examples are really good.
The reason you may want to do this is that you are creating a device with some new features that you want to be available for some specific applications shipped with the device. It is also a good exercise to run through in order to understand the frameworks used by Android. This is the preferred way to do this and to quote Dianne Hackborn on the official mailing lists (found here):
If you are going to allow the user to keep Market on their phone, and are adding any new features, please do this the official way: include your own shared library with the features that applications use, rather than having magic hacks in the framework for them.
The example for this reside in the vendor/samples folder in the Android open source project. There are several components in this example:
It is even possible to create an SDK add-on in order to have the added features easily available when developing applications. We will talk more about SDK add-ons in a later post.
To understand what is in this sample start out by reading the readme file in vendor/sample/frameworks/PlatformLibrary. This file describes the above components in more detail and will also tell you what you need to know in order to test the framework additions on a system.
If you are like us and like to try things out on the platform and work directly with some features that are not currently available in Android it is a good thing to follow these examples. It removes the need for making changes directly in the framework when exploring the possibilities of the platform.
Unprintable characters can make a variable “seem” empty
بازدید : 241 مرتبه
Another case of being careful about your perceptions. I was doing some reading and writing to the Android sharedpreferences file and mistakenly thought that data wasn’t making it into the underlying XML file. The reason for this was that the string I was reading from the file contained completely unprintable characters (extreme non-ASCII). Because of this, the Eclipse IDE’s variable watch window showed what I thought was an empty string for the variable (e.g. -> “”). Eventually I noticed that despite the “” interpretation of the variable’s string contents, the count field for the variable was non-zero.
What really compounded this perceptual mistake was that the ADB shell (perhaps any Linux shell does this), also did not display the unprintable characters making my perceptual error very hard to break through. When I dumped the contents of my sharedpreferences file with the shell’s cat command, I saw what appeared to be an empty XML field. For example, <fieldname></fieldname>. In reality there were characters between the opening and closing XML tags, but they were not being displayed!
This lead to all sorts of time-wasting and erroneous extrapolations that all cleared up once I started checking the count field for strings rather than relying strictly on the Eclipse variable contents field in the Variable window.
Side note: remember to sanitize any strings you write to the sharedpreferences file in case any characters conflict with the XML tags being parse properly, including possibly quotes and apostrophes.
Put persistent objects in the Application object
بازدید : 229 مرتبه
The way objects can reference each other can lead to subtle memory leaks as discussed in this Android document. Objects that are used by Activities, for example static Class members, can end up making it impossible for the garbage collector to free the Activity since that Activity may be referenced by the object in a cyclic way. For example, Drawables in Android have a callback reference to the widget in the Activity’s layout that it is tied to. If the object is a memory hog you can end up leaking memory badly, especially if the Activity is tied to hordes of other memory consuming objects that are now unable to be freed. Rather than try to analyze every object reference or Activity chain in your application, it is better to follow one simple rule of thumb religiously:
The Application object is create only once in an Android application and persists through the application’s life cycle. Put any objects that you want to persist, including those you don’t want reloaded every time a particular Activity starts due to excessive loading times, in the Application object and reference them through that class.
Name Shadowing and Conflicts – better Eclipse Settings
بازدید : 232 مرتبه
Today I fought a nasty bug that was caused when I accidentally declared a Class method local variable with the same name as a Class level variable. Eclipse 3.5.2 in its stock configuration ignores this kind of a name shadowing/conflict. Fortunately there’s an IDE setting that you can use to have these kinds of errors flagged. Go to the following location in the IDE:
Eclipse -> Preferences -> Java -> Compiler -> Errors/Warnings -> Name shadowing and conflicts
And set Field declaration hides another field or variable and Local variable declaration hides another field or variable to Error or Warning, whichever you prefer. Here’s the StackOverflow question I asked that got me that solution.
Debugging NullPointerException exceptions
بازدید : 201 مرتبه
Debugging a NullPointerException can be a huge annoyance when debugging an Android application. I use Eclipse 3.2 for my Android/Java programming. An Android application by default is a highly event driven multi-threaded program (aka 3-ring circus). If you find that you are getting a NullPointerException in some weird part of your code or worse in the Android library with your code nowhere to be found in the stack trace, it is most likely due to the exception actually occurring in some other part of your code. However, the NullPointerException doesn’t get raised in the debugger until some background event or other thread occurs making it hard to figure out where your code went wrong. The two main suggestions I found in this area on this wonderfully helpful StackOverflow post are:
1) Check Eclipse’s LogCat to see what part of your code was running at the time of the exception.
2) Execute the following steps to make sure “Suspend On Caught Exceptions” is active.

Remember to switch to a Java source file before running your app
بازدید : 261 مرتبه
This is a bit annoying. If you are currently editing a non-source file like an XML based resource like a layout and you use the Run or Debug option in Eclipse, you will not run your app but instead will trigger some strange operation on the XML file. Easiest is to switch to one of your project’s Java source files before doing Run or Debug.
Note, if you do accidentally attempt to run a non-source element like an XML file, you may need to delete a file that an auto-generated before you do Run or Debug, or you will find that errors in the unwanted auto-generated file are preventing your app from being launched. For example, if you tried to Run/Debug an XML file, you will probably find another file with the XML file’s name and the extension “.out”. You must delete the “.out” file and then switch the editor to one of your Java source files before you can run your project.
If you still see error icons in the Eclipse project tree, you may need to do a Clean operation to get Eclipse to see that you have fixed the problem.
Specify your widget margin/padding property values in “dip” units
بازدید : 224 مرتبه
This one baffled me for a while. I had an Android layout open in the Eclipse graphical layout editor with a TextView component. Every time I changed any of the Margin or Padding properties the widgets disappeared off the layout, even if I entered the smallest non-zero value of 1. Turns out that I needed to add the string “dip” after the number. I guess the default units for margin is something that translates to a huge distance on the layout. For example, instead of 4 enter 4dip.

This is my first real post to my new blog that is in essence a diary of my bold new adventure into the land of Android devices and Macintosh computers. I am a veteran Windows PC client application programmer. Although I have spent at least 6 years programming web pages and web servers, using the standard LAMP stack with PHP at the center, my primary focus always seemed to end up being Windows desktop client applications written in Delphi professional 6. Like Rip Van Winkle finally waking from his deep slumber I find myself in a world where smart phones and the “cloud” are dominating the scene and it’s time to dive in and start swimming those waters.
When faced with a major paradigm shift I like to get as fresh as start as possible, to put a mental “firewall” between the old paradigm and the new. This is why I have chosen to jump on to the Mac Mini I bought some time ago to facilitate my journey instead of sticking with Windows tools. Also, my first project is programming for the Android smart phone so I have installed Eclipse on my Mac Mini with the Android plug-in as my primary IDE. I hope you enjoy my trials and tribulations, rants, tips, and frustrations, as I stumble through the fascinating word of Android devices and Macintosh computers.

A couple of new trojan variants, “BD.HongTouTou.A” and “BD.HongTouTou.B”, have been found in alternative Chinese Android App Markets. The malware is being repackaged into legitimate popular apps like the game RoboDefense and wallpaper apps, it’s then uploaded to alternative markets and forums.
The trojan is programmed for a whole slew of techniques that could make the make the issuers money or leak personal information to them. The trojan receives commands to emulate searches on search engines using defined keywords and then clicking on links like a real user had performed the search from their phone making the issuers money. The malware can monitor users communications and insert it’s own keywords into the conversation. And it also has the ability to download and install new apps but there have not been any signs of it doing so yet.

The Future of Windows Phone
بازدید : 340 مرتبه
The Windows Phone platform has been out for over a year, and yet, we have seen it make minimal impact on the smartphone market. Its market share has been languishing at less than 4% in the US market, with sales showing no signs of taking off anytime soon. With the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 to rave reviews, Microsoft & Nokia are hoping to make a splash in the US to drive the platform. Can Windows Phone evolve to become a viable third platform in the smartphone market?
First, let’s understand the problems plaguing the Windows Phone platform:
1) Lack of Manufacturer & Carrier Confidence
Over the last year, HTC and Samsung launched multiple Windows Phone models to complete indifference from consumers. As a result, OEMs invested less in marketing their Windows Phone products, as they didn’t see a large market out there that found the platform appealing. Microsoft found this situation so disturbing that they decided to rope in the sinking ship that was Nokia, and pay them nearly $250 for each Windows Phone shipped. Even carriers have not shown much interest in promoting Windows Phone. There are mixed signals with Nokia roping in AT&T to launch the Lumia 900 in the US, but major European carriers voicing their dissatisfaction over the sales performance of the Lumia line.
2) The Myth of the WP Marketplace
I’ve read a lot of reports lately about the “fast growing” Windows Phone Marketplace. The argument goes something like this:
This argument completely ignores the staggering growth of the number of app developers since the launch of the iOS and Android platforms. One study credits the “app economy” created by iOS and Android with creating over half a million jobs, from practically none in 2007. This growth has undoubtedly been exponential, and therefore, we have a ratio of 1-2 mobile developers per app for iOS/Android vs. roughly 10 developers per app for Windows Phone. This clearly indicates that developers have not yet shown great interest in the Windows Phone platform. To corroborate this data, jobs for freelance mobile developers have seen a drop of nearly 30% for Microsoft’s platform, while those for Android and iOS have grown by about 160% and 80% respectively.
3) Consumer Indifference
As I’ve already detailed above, Windows Phone has not really made an impact on the smartphone market, as consumers have been drawn to Android handsets and the iPhone. This has not even escaped the eyes of Nokia’s management team, as they’ve stated in their SEC filing.
Now, given that the stakes for Nokia and Microsoft, in the success of the Windows Phone platform, are incredibly high, what can they do to make the platform viable?
1) Identify your Target Market
Research shows that most smartphone owners, specifically 70% of Android and iOS users will retain their current platforms going forward. This trend will only grow stronger as consumers become more familiar with these platforms, and even the Lumia 900 will have difficulty breaking through this barrier. In addition to this, Android and the iPhone already own significant mindshare in developed markets, where smartphone penetration is already high. Their mindshare in emerging markets is growing as well, but it is not yet at a stage where it is a significant entry barrier. Keeping these facts in mind, along with the problems highlighted above, the target market shrinks to non-smartphone owners, primarily in emerging markets.
2) Understand your Target Market
Feature phone users, especially those in emerging markets, tend to be significantly price sensitive. Android manufacturers have already begun to acquire these consumers with attractively priced devices, which increase their odds of upgrading the same user to a higher priced handset down the road. Nokia has taken a step towards this marketing by launching the Lumia 610 at $250. But this pricing model is not nearly aggressive enough, as shown by Samsung launching the Galaxy Pocket at around $140. In addition to this, Google has made it clear that their next goal is to challenge feature phone prices.
3) Time is of the Essence
One thing both Nokia and Microsoft don’t seem to understand is that their window of opportunity, even in this market, is extremely limited. In order to understand why, we need to take a look at two key factors:
(i) Hardware Cost
According to Moore’s law, processing power doubles every 18-24 months. The more important business definition is that, today’s hardware may cost half as much in 18-24 months.
(ii) Impact of Hardware on Performance
Second, Android, as an operating system, tends to be hardware dependent, because of its ability to multi-task and multi-thread tasks at equal priority. Windows Phone and iOS are fairly limited, lightweight operating systems, and are hence, less hardware dependent. But as hardware capability improves, Android devices show the largest jumps in performance – Anyone who’s picked up a Tegra 3 device would know what I’m talking about.
This means that today’s low-end Windows Phones offer superior performance to low-end Android phones. The challenge is to get consumers to try these Windows Phone devices while this short-lived advantage exists, when consumer opinion & word-of-mouth is on Android’s side. Once you have acquired a low-end customer, it is easier to upgrade him/her to a higher end device within the same platform. The scary part is that Nokia seems to realize this, and still seems to be dragging its feet, most likely because of the following reason.
4) Cannibalize your own Products to survive
Nokia is likely very reluctant to aggressively cut prices on its new Windows Phone models because it risks cannibalizing its feature phone portfolio in these markets, specifically the newly launched Asha series. What they need to understand is that these devices don’t have much of a future anyway, with both global & local Android manufacturers launching smartphones at the same price points. In fact, this trend has already had a negative impact on Nokia’s Q1 guidance. If Nokia wants Windows Phone to survive, they must cannibalize their own products.
Nokia needs to bite the bullet and cut prices & margins on its Windows Phone models to drive adoption among first time smartphone buyers in emerging markets. If Nokia misses the boat on this opportunity, Windows Phone will have little chance to be a major player in the future.

When Google rebranded Android Market as the Google Play, it seems it really wanted users to play more rented movies on their Android devices. Upon securing deals with several major movie studios, the most recent being the deal that saw 500 movies from Paramount Pictures heading to Google Play and YouTube, the latest licensing deal sees Google and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cozying up together to bring an additional 600 of the legendary studio’s movies to Google’s video vault.
The partnership between Google and MGM means that some classic movie titles like “Terminator”, “Rocky” and “Robocop” will be available for rent on Google Play and YouTube in North America. The typical rent fee is $1.99 for older movies, while for the newer ones the price is set at $3.99.
With MGM joining Paramount Pictures, Universal, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros, and Disney — and coupled with some independent studios like Lions Gate and Weinstein Company — there are now about 10,000 movie titles that users can rent via Google. This somewhat evens the playing field between Google Play and other heavyweights in the industry, such as Netflix, iTunes and Amazon. Of course, getting 20th Century Fox on board would really be the icing on the movie streaming cake, but this may not happen anytime soon seeing that the CEO Rupert Murdoch still has a beef with Google.
Are you excited that you can now rent “Terminator” series on the go and replay the “I’ll be back” scene ad nauseam? Do you rent movies at all from Google Play? Share your experience with our readers below.

Nemus Launcher: Combining performance and customizability
بازدید : 255 مرتبه
There are a lot of launchers from Google Play Store that will surely suit the needs of your Android phone, be it for high performance or great customization options. If you prefer a launcher that fits provides both, you might want to check out Nemus Launcher.
Nemus Launcher this is another alternative launcher that you might want to try. The launcher allows for easy app management, workspace management, folder management, and low memory usage on your phone.
Just like most launchers today, the Nemus Launcher is very easy to set up. So if you are a newbie, you don’t have anything to worry much because for sure you will get the hang of this app in no time.
As far as the features are concerned, Nemus Launcher has several items on shelf for you to use, including some extra features to give you extra excitement. The great thing about this app is that it is very easy to use. When you use it, you have the familiar homescreen and app drawer set up where you are provided with 9 workspaces in which you can place your favorite apps and widgets.
And if you have more apps, you don’t have to worry because the folders in the workspace and app list are expandable. It also has a Copy Home Screen feature which will back up and restore launcher set up, so no worries if you keep changing ROMs.
Aside from the essential features of Nemus Launcher, the developer has also included some extra features. It has several customization options that allow you to tweak some of the things in the user-interface such as landscape or horizontal orientation, page indicator display, grid layout, and more.
One great feature and probably the highlight among all of the customization options of this app is that it is theme-ready and you can install SKIN themes from Google Play Store.
User reviews prove that the functionality and customizability of Nemus Launcher are truly desirable. Many have already tried other launchers but switched to Nemus because it is simpler and more effective without sacrificing aesthetics at all. The only thing that seems to give users some problem is that it lags when loading app icons from the app drawer, but other than that many users prefer it to other launchers.
Try Nemus Launcher if you want to experience great performance and customization on your Android phone. Download Nemus Launcher for free from the Google Play Store.

The countdown to the unveiling of Samsung’s next Galaxy phone, which we’ll still call the Samsung Galaxy S3 until further confirmation, has begun. With 14 days left to the Samsung Unpacked Event in London, where the flagship device is set to be introduced, the scene is filled with so-called industry sources coming out of their hiding to share “exclusive” news about the phone.
Whether or not the news is accurate is an entirely different matter, since these sources can hide behind their anonymity. But anyway, speculation is part of the fun of greeting a new device into the world. Here are the latest rumors of the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Pocket-lint reports they have received confirmation from “people familiar with the matter” that one unit of Samsung Galaxy S3 has landed in the UK – albeit heavily guarded – with the phone locked safely inside a steel box. Apparently, Samsung wants to familiarize mobile phone operators in the UK with the next Galaxy phone prior to the official unveiling. This seems to suggest that a release date in the UK will come soon after the event.
Another industry source in the UK, meanwhile, was kind enough to share details about the Samsung Galaxy S3 to CNET. According to the anonymous source, there’s a possibility that Samsung won’t be using the Galaxy S3 name. To be specific, the quotes were: “Don’t expect it to be called the S3.” Apparently, the internal codename for the phone is “Bali”. Samsung Galaxy Bali? Samsung Bali? Meh, probably not. We don’t think it’d be such a good idea to steer away from the Galaxy S name that has been so deeply ingrained in the psyche of millions of Android enthusiasts. We’ll see soon enough.
Here’s another kick in the groin. The same source reveals that apparently the Samsung Galaxy S3 won’t be a significant update over the S2. “It’ll be like the iPhone 4S was to the 4,” said the source. While no specs were given, he hinted that the phone would be rocking what HTC One X has – more or less.
One interesting feature of the Samsung Galaxy S3 that the source mentioned is the eye-tracking capability of the phone, something that Samsung has dubbed the “Human Interaction” feature. Using the front camera of the phone, it can spookily detect when you are looking at the screen, like when you’re browsing or texting, and will automatically lock the phone once you look away. We can’t really judge how useful or annoying this feature is until we get more information on how it works.
That wraps up another edition of the Samsung Galaxy S3 rumor mill. We’re pretty sure that this isn’t the end, so keep your eyes peeled for more. But first, what do you think about the possible name change? Do you think Samsung would go through the trouble of keeping everything so secret if the Galaxy S3 wouldn’t really offer any significant improvement? Are you looking forward to the phone’s eye-tracking feature? Chime in below.

Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S2s in the UK receive Android 4.0 update

The Samsung Galaxy S2 Android 4.0 update train in slowly chugging along. The update is still not available in a lot of major markets including India and the US (if you don’t count the leaked update for the AT&T Galaxy S2 Skyrocket). But almost every Samsung UK customer will be very happy.
Following rollouts for Galaxy S2s on the Vodafone, O2, and Three networks, the update is now available for all unlocked (contract-free) and SIM-free devices in the UK. I mentioned “almost every Samsung UK customer” earlier, as the update is still not available for customers on the T-Mobile and Orange networks. In a statement issued to Pocket-Lint, Samsung UK mentioned that the updates for Orange and T-Mobile will follow as soon as possible, pending software testing and approvals.
The Android 4.0 update for the Samsung Galaxy S2 include a host of new features such as:
The update is available via Samsung’s desktop update software, Kies. All you need to do is plug in the device to your PC with an USB cable, open Kies and click on the “Firmware Upgrade” button. If you don’t already have Kies, you can download it here.

T-Mobile, has faced a difficult few years, losing a lot of customers due to the absence of an official iPhone in its lineup, and with the AT&T buyout failing due to regulatory hurdles. Long story short, the No. 4 carrier in the US is now scrambling to become relevant again, in a race dominated by carrier powerhouses AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint.
Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile’s parent company, will invest over $4 billion in its American operations to erect a 4G LTE network. In the meanwhile, the company hopes to complete the rollout of its HSPA+ “4G” network, which is more akin to an advanced 3G technology than true 4G. There are also plans to pump up $200 million in advertising spending.
T-Mobile is seemingly going all in with the release of the HTC One S, with a huge launch party taking place in New York later this week. Similar to Microsoft’s “Smoked by a Windows Phone” and Nokia’s “Smartphone Beta Test” campaigns, T-Mobile is launching a “test drive” website, aiming to prove the superiority of the HTC One S against its competition. However, I don’t see the One S, or any other device in T-Mo’s lineup being “superior” to AT&T’s HTC One XL or Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G LTE so I’m looking forward to seeing how T-Mobile is going to play this.
Along with this promotional blitz, T-Mobile has decided to go with a complete re-branding of its image. In an interview with AllThingsD, senior VP Peter DeLuca mentions that the carrier is preparing for a brand refresh later in the year, stating that “We really can’t wait until the end of the year to make some noise in the market.”
The first step in this re-branding is to change the image of the T-Mobile spokeswoman Carly Foulkes, who has appeared in almost every T-Mobile advert since 2010. Carly, best known as “the girl in the pink dress” will be discarding said pink dress in favor of leather and a Ducati.
The new soon-to-be-aired ad spots will primarily feature the HTC One S for now. I’m not entirely sure about what this change signifies. Is it T-Mobile’s attempt to portray a “good girl gone bad” image (wait, what?) or is the Ducati symbolic of how fast new T-mobile devices and their network is going to be?
Either way, wow. Doesn’t she look absolutely stunning in leather?
Below is a very short teaser of the advert the full ad:
Will the “new” Carly be able to save T-Mobile? Will T-Mobile be able to return to its former glory? Let us know in the comments section below.

Medical personnel are trained to look for a cell phone and find ICE contacts if the situation calls for it. The Einstein Healthcare Network ICE App places two emergency contacts inside your phone and even puts a contacts info on your lock screen wallpaper.
[What is it?]Can you imagine an app can test your breathing rate? Breath Health Tester appears It can help users test the breathing rate degree of evenness of breathing and also calculate the estimated heart rate.[How does it work?]The principle of this app is based on the air flow produced when breathing out. Users should keep the microphone closed to nose and then when breathing out the air flow will reach to mic and make big sound. When breathing in since there is no air flow out the mic will receive little sound.[How to use it?]In order to reach to the accurate result users should follow these steps. Step 1 before starting the app find a silent place. Step 2 Keep the phone close to your nose make sure the air flow can reach to the mic. Step 3 press start button and begin to test. Fragger Android Game, Grenade Launching Action
بازدید : 307 مرتبه
The Fragger Android Game is a grenade launching action adventure, where hundreds of tricky levels meet hundreds of exploding enemies.
Fragger features over 370 challenging levels spread across 12 different worlds. The mission of each level is to obliterate every single enemy using the limited supply of grenades provided. Throwing grenades is a simple process aided by a large arrow to help fine tune the direction and strength of your throw. Move your finger around the screen to adjust the angle and then move toward/away from Fragger to set the strength. You can perform these actions from anywhere on your device’s screen so that your finger doesn’t obstruct your view.
This Android game boasts solid graphics and an accurate physics-engine that add significantly to its extended playability. Also, a convenient design feature is the fixed menu attached to the right side of the screen, which enables you to pause or reset a level with one quick click (you’ll use this menu more and more as levels get progressively more difficult).
If you get stuck on a level, the developer has built in a couple neat options to help thwart any serious frustration you might experience. For one, there’s the option to view the working solution so that you can then try to execute it yourself. Second, you can also choose to completely skip a level. Note that these options are limited and once they’ve been exhausted you’ll either have to purchase more or earn them for free (the in-game link for free coins/credits was not available at the time of this review).
Areas for improvement:
Conclusion: The Fragger Android game is quite reminiscent of Angry Birds but with the added explosive power of grenades!
APP Lock Android App, Secure Private & Personal Info
بازدید : 237 مرتبه
The APP Lock Android app is a simple solution for protecting some (or all) of your applications with a number passcode or lockscreen style pattern.
When you launch APP Lock for the first time, you’ll be asked to choose a passcode or pattern that will be required to open APP Lock and any secured applications. As many of you already know, it’s best practice to use a completely unique password that would be difficult for someone to guess. Also, avoid using the same passcode or lockscreen pattern as you’ve set for the phone itself.
The app’s main screen displays a comprehensive list of every app you have installed on your device. For app’s with potentially private or otherwise sensitive information, flip the lock switch to instantly make it password protected. Some Android apps you might want to lock are Email, Facebook, Gallery, Google+, or Messenger. For those who prefer ultimate protection there’s even the option to lock every single app (whether or not it’s practical is up to you).
As a bonus, there are specific system functions you can lock like the ability to install/uninstall apps from the device or Android Market as well as even answering an incoming phone call.
APP Lock also includes a few convenient settings like whether or not you’ll need to re-enter the password for an app after toggling the screen on/off or how much time can pass before being asked for credentials again.
Areas for improvement:
Conclusion: APP Lock Android app is a simple, elegant method for protecting various apps’ private information from snoopy friends, family, or total strangers.
CloudMagic Android App: Fast, Personal Search Engine
بازدید : 199 مرتبه
The CloudMagic Android app (and browser extension) lets you search across personal data services using a single query, minimizing the time it takes to find what you’re looking for.
Currently, the CloudMagic Android app only supports the following services:
CloudMagic works by indexing upfront the data (e.g. email, documents, contacts) found in the services listed above. Each individual search you place with CloudMagic combs through all of the data simultaneously and returns results separated by the type of data. For more targeted searches, make use of descriptive qualifiers like “from:” “to:” “filename:” and “tweet:”. Search results are updated instantaneously as you enter more detailed text in the search field. The search algorithm is even sophisticated enough to handle partial searches, which if you’re forgetful like me are an extremely common occurrence.
As a productivity tool, this app cuts down significantly on the amount of time you spend trying to find a certain email, calendar event, or twitter follower. And one of the largest conveniences is that you don’t even have to open a specific app in order to perform a search within it.
Because the app and service are currently labeled “beta” it’s understandable that the number of services it supports is small. It almost goes without saying that the addition of popular networks/services like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Dropbox will make this app that much more powerful and popular.
Areas for improvement:
Conclusion: The CloudMagic Android app is an efficient, multi-service search tool that saves you time and effort by finding emails, documents, or even tweets all at breakneck speed.

App Inventor končí
بازدید : 129 مرتبه
Samsung Galaxy S dostal Androida 2.3.3 Gingerbread
بازدید : 321 مرتبه
Ani současná aktualizace díru do světa neudělá, protože neoficiální zdroje jsou o jednu minoritní verzi (2.3.4) dál, než to co Samsung uživatelům předhazuje s půl ročním zpožděním.

SkyDrive for Windows phone gets update to v2
بازدید : 220 مرتبه
SkyDrive has received a new update to version 2. Not many new changes are noticed as it seems to be bug fixes and tweaks at the back end. However the UI is now smoother and you can batch select to delete or move items.
In addition you now have the option to share contents of files and folded to friends, family and contacts via your People Hub.
You can grab the download from your local Marketplace. If you do not see it then do not worry as it may take slightly longer to arrive in some places than others. However, I can confirm that it has hit UK shores.

Samsung’s The Next Galaxy Website Begins Countdown

Samsungs new domain tgeltaayexhxnx.com leaves no surprises here. The anagram of The Next Galaxy takes us to a holding page where a clock has begin its countdown to the next steps.
3 May 2012 will be the announcement day for the new Samsung Mobile.
Leaks have been thrown around about what the new device might contain from it being an official olympic device with specialised applications to its being a new tablet.
However, we have seen these countdown pages before, so it is not very enlightening or exciting from my perspective. However, I guess it can be hard to be innovative these days but I do hope that the new Samsung device does break the mold and brings something different to the industry.

Nokia Windows Phone 8: Fluid Devices Show Up
بازدید : 240 مرتبه
While the discussion continues about whether window phone 8 will come to present windows phone 7 devices.
Work on windows 8 appears to be going full steam ahead with two new devices showing up on T-Mobile, Verizon. The two new devices go under the codename Fluid, which could be changed in the future. The Qualcomm Fluid and the Nokia Fluid have shown up before but now Windows phone 8 shows up under the full user agent as running IE10.
The speeds of the Verizon device is fast, so we are hoping this has LTE on board, the other device on T-Mobile was not so good. Both devices show with resolution of 768×768 and 480×480.

Nokia Lumia 800: Vodafone Update Coming Soon
بازدید : 188 مرتبه
The latest update to the Nokia Lumia 800 has been aiming towards the networks for some time and whilst SIM free users have been enjoying the new updates, Vodafone users are still waiting.
Where’s My Update? You ask, well it could be here very soon.
Nokia’s own “Where’s My Update?” table gives information about past and present updates available by region, country and operator.
The updates for Vodafone now lists the latest update as “software under creation” alongside another update coming soon.
We have no definitive information on whether the latter will be the WiFi tethering update or whether it is related to bug fixes.
However, keep an eye on the update table to see the status of your forthcoming update.

GSM customers of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus found the new update arrived this morning. It is a minor tweak to the present operating system of Android 4.0.4 and does not changed the version. However, the update to Google’s flagship phone brings the device build number up to IMM761 from its previous IMM76D.
The new updated brings a few tweaks including bug fixes for the intermittent signal loss that affected some users and the lock-screen lag.
It is likely to take some time for the update to be pushed out to all Nexus owners, so do be patient.
Have you already received the update and if so, what changes have you found?
Apple iPhone Find New Method of Transport to China: Smugglers Route
بازدید : 240 مرتبه
A new method of transporting the iPhone to China has arrived. The new packaging involves a beer bottle and some black-bin-bag wrappings.
Chinese officials have caught a latest smuggler of Apple’s iPhones attempting to bring the smartphones illegally into the country via a new method. Gone are the iconic white boxed packaging from Apple and in comes a black-bin-bag and a glass beer bottle.
The smuggler, on her way to Shenzhen from Hong Kong was caught with the devices hidden inside 25 ounce solid glass beer bottles.
Watch the video to see how the event took place. Fast Forward to 00.40 secs.
Perhaps the Chinese government will need to think twice before placing a ban on the iPad due to trademark disputes if they do not wish this sort of tactic to take hold as consumers and smuggles out-run the import officials.
It is not known whether the illegal imports are devices which had already been imported out of the country.

Microsoft planning double sided smartphone display?
بازدید : 418 مرتبه
Microsoft could be planning a double-sided smartphone display system according to a recent patent trademark filing by the Redmond based company. According to PatentBolt, Microsoft filed the patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on Friday with the invention allowing certain types of information to be moved from the main display to the rear display, which will be powered by low-powered processor.
The secondary display could also be used in customising the device, with the option to choose your own colour for the display to turn being touted as one of the possibilities for this invention.
It’s unclear when (or if) the display will come to market, but it will likely be running Microsoft’s Windows Phone or Windows 8 operating systems and possibly made by Nokia, who recently released the Nokia Lumia 900 as part of their re-entry into the US.

However, there is good news on the horizon from today. Apple has announced it is to hire 500 people for its European headquarters in Cork. The implementation will take place over the next 18 months and will increase the present staffing of 2,800.
a spokesman for Apple said:

He did not say what the roles involved but the headquarters in Cork is known for its distribution and supply chain management.
The country as a whole has seen some boosts by attacking both Google and Facebook due to its low corporation tax and educated English-speaking workforce.
